HI, I've only made like $4 in the past 4 months...

   I did notice last time I put keywords, used the keyword tool, I had a jump in my views.
   
   But I've been telling people I just don't want to use that tool. Do you think it's necessary thou?

      I think that you anwered your own question - your views were higher when you used the keyword tool
      
      So why do you not want to keyword tool?  It tells you which words/phrases people are searching for around your topic, all you have to do is incorporate some of them into your writing?

         I went to the libray a couple hours ago and did a bunch of hubs w/ the keyword tool that is, put new keywords in.  But I'm glad I said this...not only did it motivate me, but
         
         I never thought about reasearching keywords BEFORE wriitn my hubs! or before putting in the title at least!! Thanks

      Looking at your Hubs, you write a mixture of non-commercial and commercial Hubs.
      
      For your spiritual Hubs, the keyword tool isn't going to make much difference - that kind of subject just doesnt get much readership whatever you do.
      
      If you're writing purely to make money - e.g. reviewing a product - then using the keyword tool is a must, because you've got to compete with other people "selling" the same thing.
      
      
      Like Hypno said - can you clarify why you don't want to use the tool?

         Um, because I like the writing part the best, and on my other acct I've been writing alot of poems which ...use similar keywords.
         
         Truth is I'm lazy or been lazy.
         I am going to pick things up. !
         
         I love to write about God, so I won't stop, but I don't understand...oh what if I put books or medals, crosses from amazon on the page, will that help??
         "doesn't get much readership?" some of mine get alot , they even rank almost as high as mental health, which are my best...in the 80's for scores.
         
         I think mental health is important too don't you? I could put books there too.
         
         reviewing products is boring to me, mostly, unless I'm excited about the product. I hate "sales' as in when I sold vacuums, but I see your point. thx for responding!!

            Well, I think that's true of most of us!  I don't use the keyword tool as much as I should either, but it's a conscious choice - this is a hobby for me, so the priority is that I enjoy it.
            
            
            
            By all means, write about God if you love it!  However, I think I hear some fundamental misunderstandings here. 
            
            First, the score of a Hub tells you nothing about it's money-making potential.  Second, having a lot of readers means nothing, if they don't click on ads.  It's possible to have a Hub that gets lots of visitors, but if they're just there to read and not looking for something to buy, it won't earn you anything!   Ask yourself what the visitors to your religious or poetry Hubs are looking for? 
            
            Fundamentally, you can't complain about low earnings if you're not willing to write on subjects that have a commercial "angle".  That doesn't mean you have to write sales Hubs.
            
            I write about things I'm interested in, but I do try to look for a sales angle - for instance, writing about belly dance DVD's or costumes, instead of just writing about belly dance.    I know that probably doesn't earn as much as a "sales Hub", but it's the right model for me because I want to enjoy the writing and make some income at the same time.
            
            You may value enjoyment more highly and will therefore write what you want, with no heed for commercialism - while others see the writing as a means to an end and put all their emphasis on the income.  Both are legitimate ways to use HubPages.  To each their own, I say!

               Good point again, Marissa. And I agree on belly dance...I'd write about the dance too not the dvd's or costumes...but actually I think people would even enjoy it more that way...and may buy more if they get more info about belly dancing...and if they come to read about belly dancing,,they may just buy something! I know I would. But...as for costumes,,yeah maybe they'd search for costume explanation ....but you got to "fill the page" a bit I suppose.

      Yeah, I have to agree with the census majority here and say you might have answered your own question.  Keywords can only increase your traffic if anything.  Trust me, I made that same mistake too when I first started, but I've managed to improve my traffic significantly by using the keyword tool.  It's very useful in a lot of ways.  Just remember to only use keywords that relate to your hubs, as too many can actually hurt your traffic too.

            never mind. i was thinking of TAGS, not keywords. If you have too many tags it can hurt your traffic because hubpages does flag you for it.  sorry, i got those mixed up for a minute.

   The simple answer to anyone wanting to earn money online is to learn how it works. SEO is not rocket science. If you're not after a residual income just write.
   
   If you want one - learn how to write for it. So get back to the keyword research

      It is worth it, because the income speeds up as time goes on and your hubs move up in the Google rankings. I now reach payout every month, but it took me nearly 3 years to achieve it, and 18 months before I even received my first payout. Well worth the wait though as now the earnings can only increase each month as my newer hubs reach their peak potential, (which takes approx 3 years per hub according to Hubpages information).

   I understand what you are saying and it has taken me a fair time to learn how to write, what I want to write and if it is worth it to me to write. I think the learning aspect is good - and I hope I have a better idea of what I want to create. It took me 2 years to find out I hadnt been loading my pictures properly,...lol, so that in itself makes my work easier and better!!!

      @schoolgirlforreal I really think if makes a big difference to use the keyword tool.  Schoolgirl you have alot of hubs, if you dont use the keyword tool this is traffic you are missing.  I think it is worth the effort to use the keyword tool, sometimes you may not feel up to doing a keyword search, but do it. Be encouraged, and keep hubbing!

   My first two hubs were written without any keyword research.  Between them they have received slightly over 400 views in 8 months. 
   
   If you wish to write hubs that no one can find or read, then the keyword tool is unnecessary.
   
   The problem I see is that I don't appear to use the same search terms as most people.  No one searches for the same phrase.  They may look for the subject, but not with the terms I would choose.  Thus my search for keywords.

   If it were possible to make decent money writing whatever you feel without doing keyword research and SEO, I don't think anyone here would advise you otherwise.
   
   The good news is, you're in the best possible place to learn and benefit from it. Look around HubPages. Immerse yourself in the abundance of knowledge that others have freely given, and apply it to your writing. Then you will see progress.
