I quit smoking last January first, and it has stuck.  I wrote a hub about it, but I just wanted everyone to know it is possible to just quit, and it wasn't that difficult.

congratulations! and this is very good for me to hear because i am quitting on November 18, 2010, which is the Great American Smokeout held by the American Cancer Society. I'm beginning to believe that it is largely psychological!

Just for the fun of it...I actually didn't know my quit date...and this is completely coincidental...but I actually quit smoking the day before the great American smokeout day...crazy enough...

      I quite smoking July 23rd, 2010.

I miss it terribly.  I loved to smoke cigs.  I miss the way they taste, the smell of cigs and everything about the darn things.

      OMG, I want a cigarette!!

Seriously, I'll be so glad when I'm finally over this hump.  Its been really, really, hard.

I recently wrote a few words about that unhealthy habit which can consume and take our lives if we allow it to. Well done for kicking the habit!

My experience is that it is a life time addiction.  I gave up for 15 years, had a hard episode in life which resulted in me taking up the habit again on a weak moment.  I was amazed how quickly and easily it was to re-establish.  One cigarette had me hooked again.  I tell you this, so as you are aware of the ease of reuptake.

Fortunately, I gave up again, but found myself being quite psychotic, even after a short time of smoking.  It is THAT addictive for me.

What I have learned is that I have an addictive personality where 'just one' is not enough. So, giving up on smoking, is a very individual experience and knowing yourself is the key to success.

Well done for kicking the habit!

This was my point, it does not need to be a lifelong battle.  There are ways to get rid of the craving, and once you do that, it is easy, for you no longer ever crave them again.  It has to do with self hypnosis, and brainwashing yourself.  I have quit several really bad habits this way.  Check out my hubs on habits and addictions and it gives you a step by step procedure.  I had really good results, and the secret is, smokes taste really bad to me now, so the taste for them is just gone.

Yes, I had a stroke a month ago. I lost my speech, my bladder control, my balance and my desire for a smoke!
My speech is very nearly back to normal, my balance is back to normal and so is my bladder control. I have no desire to smoke though!

You are very correct about addictions being a very personal and different experience for everyone.  I have been addicted to every possible substance one could think of, from smokes to heroin.  It took a doctor working with me and some very serious decision making on my part for what one has to do is make up your mind, and do it.  Then, if you don't make it, don't give up, and don't feel guilt, just take up where you left off and keep going with your head held high and the knowledge in your heart that you are trying, and that you will succeed eventually.  Keep smiling, keep talking about it and don't give up.

Magnificent! Congratulations. I quit smoking September 20th 2006 and have been smoke free since. I can't think about it too long or I feel myself wanting one, therefore this reply will end soon. It takes a lot of strength, so congrats on being so strong.

Congratulations to all of you who have quit. It takes tremendous commitment and stamina to get through all those phases of withdrawal including old fashioned body language habits that put us in the comfort zone. I too have Hubbed about it, hoping to help, suggesting everything from e-cigs to meditation, but it really begins with a true desire to change who you are, i.e. a smoker. Once I decided I was not longer a smoker, I could begin my recovery and it worked. Good luck to everyone who gives it a go.

Actually that is one reason I decided to quit, for the doctor told me because of my family health history, I had a 150% chance of dying from cancer.  Everyone in my family has died of cancer, and it is not a good way to go.

Congratulations to those who have quit smoking! I am a Tobacco Treatment Specialist (just starting out on here) and know it is both a physical and a psychological battle to put down the cigs.  But the battle CAN be won and I've seen so many different paths to victory.  Love to see the support on here!

I quit smoking in January of 1983.  For many years, I would still get the urge for a cigarette.  Each time the episode was shorter than the time before, and the cravings got farther and farther apart.  I gave in a couple times, during the first two years.  But I reminded myself how far I had come and that I didn't want to start that nasty habit back up again.  I can't even remember the last time I wanted a cigarette.  I now find them repulsing and can't even stand the smell of smokers I encounter for even the briefest amount of time.

Congratulations to all of you who have quit, and for those of you who haven't, you CAN do it!

Are you guys still sleeping?still smoking?Try to stop it just from now.It injures our health very badly.Smoking affects majorly in brain, heart and lungs. For women it stuck pregnancy. Why to waste our money and time in such a habit that causes nothing but the harm? Passive smoking is harmful as well as active one.We should try to avoid passive smoking zones also. Why to let life in hell ! Try to avoid it,trust me ,it's not so much impossible .
