I think it is a good thing. It will make people think twice before putting that evil stick in their mouth. I don't know if people will stop smoking, but atleast they will see what can happen if they continue to smoke.
Did you just close this thread somewhere else - just as I was posting to it ??????
I'm sorry. I didn't like how I posted it and it wouldn't let me edit my title so I deleted and started over.
No need to be sorry - I did not know you could delete a thread yourself is all and so started a wild conspiracy theory thread about dissapearing threads
I completely agree with you, and + I would make cigarettes even more expensive.
I really don't give a flying f**k to what appears on the pack. In my country (Portugal) some years ago they start to put messages like: smoke kills, and related, i really don't care.
If i stop smoking, it will not be because of the messages on the pack.
Same as Spain then Pedrog, but they did also introduce the gruesome pictures bit a few weeks ago. Now you have dead people on cigarette packets, and people with bloody cancerous neck growths and all sorts.
Quite interesting really, as an ex nurse I saw plenty of things like that while working.
Won't affect my decision to stop smoking (or not) either, which makes it a bit of a pointless exercise.
..ummmmmmm...i think folks already know....it's an addiction...so the pics don't quite cut it.....it could deter some who've never smoked however...but doubt if it actually impacts smokers....and gov't feels good - like they've done their job....while collecting all those taxes....imho....
Wait till they start posting pics of obese people on McDonalds bags!
...now that's an interesting thought - do you think it would make a difference?...are folks addicted to mcd's?...i don't know - i don't go there...
We have had the gruesome pics on cigarette packs for a while now.
The latest Australian government initiative is plain packaging.
Brilliant!
They won't be able to tell brand names from the black market dealers!
You beat me to the punch by about a minute Earnest
Your comment on IP laws getting trampled is a good one.
We did discuss reasons why we Melbournians would be likely to come to the same conclusions as I recall.
I do recall that about us Melbournites .....
Yet it's a scary thought that a govt can just decide to brush aside laws of the land simply because it's in the publics interest, yet if you or I decided to open up a burger joint and call it McDougalls and it has Golden Arcs as a brand .......
I am waiting for honesty in advertising.
Ya know like all other brands of beer except my favourites are labelled "Camels P*ss" and be done with it!
ha ha ha!...about the black market!....ha ha ha
...in Canada there have been pics and messages for awhile and vendors have to hide them from sight - I don't know how long this has been going on - years I think ..and lately, I've noticed, we like to pay attention to you Aussies on some issues - so maybe the plain wrapping is next! - even though they are hidden from the consumer....i'm curious now, whether we'll follow!...i'll have to pay closer attention.
Gruesome images to appear on cig packets in which country? Australia has had that for over 10 years on their packets with little impact.
Little where the govt now wants to legislate olive green packets with helvetica font text of the brand in white and nothing else.
Hey but that's ok, because the govt is promoting better health for all Australians, it is fine to just arbitrarily destroy IP laws in the process.
Heya SOH,
IP is short for Intelectual Property, basically it is copyright of a brand and or product and other companies or individuals who have a similar or attempt an omission of the function of a brand (as in design, logo, etc) are then infringing on IP law
....ohhhhhh.....that's bad....hadn't thought about that...but then again - i'm not losing money because my product is now going to be in a plain paper package....ha ha ha...there's no way gov't can get away with that!...that's just crazy....silly servants are not biz people that's for sure....ha ha ha....oh no...i can't wait for Canada to try to get away with that strategy!
Our cigarettes are now fully locked away in a cabinet that advertises their presence, compliments of the government.
The only sign on the cabinet is cigarettes kill in great big text!
How do these anti smoking guys manage to dress themselves in the morning?
Canada is doing pretty much the same thing - securing/hiding cigs...i know there's a message too - but i just haven't taken the time to read it...ha ha ha
...ha ha ha - about getting dressed in the mornin'....ohhhhhh....this is sounding like our health and safety folks...maybe they are Aussies...cleaning up Canada too
I guess we could put pictures of aborted fetuses and the results of chronic STD's on rubbers and other birth control devices, also. We know how awful a desease pregancy is after all. So maybe the lil girls and boys would think twice about that. What about a lver on a can a beer all torn up from ccihrosis?
I mean hell, why stop with cigarrettes.
As bad as cigarettes are, I think the idea is stupid. There was a time when doctors were used to advertise cigarettes and they were actually thought to be healthy. Today there are things like aspartame that creep in and kill, but false claims have it as being healthy.
Put a surgeon general warning on aspartame products, high fructose corn crap, and the tons of other crap that you don't have to be 18 to purchase. True cigarettes cause lung cancer, but their nicknamed cancer sticks, so it's not like people are fooled.
If you take some of the toxic additives out of cigarettes, they'll still be bad I guess, but nowhere near as bad as they are now.
I'd like to know when smoking crept in to become the cause of every known medical condition to man.
Honestly, heart attack? smoking. stomach ulcer? smoking. cataracts? smoking. psoriasis? smoking. etc etc.
If you don't smoke, they'll blame second-hand smoke or drinking alcohol.
I simply do not believe that smoking is that bad - not when compared to exhaust fumes, air pollution, E food colorings etc which seem to not be blamed for anything at all when it is all down to smoking cigarettes.
This just in - Smoking is hazardous and may cause bad forum posts......
I think it's a good idea! My boyfriend smokes a lot, and I'm not totally against it but I'd rather he didn't. I know the images that he sees now and again on the cigarette packs offend and scare him, so I hope it will bring more awareness to others of the real harm they do if more are printed on packets! Plus they stink! hehe
There are now cigarette package covers so no one has to see these images. Plus how effective are these images when it is a one in 100 million chance of getting such rare diseases from smoking. Maybe just plain education would be more effective to prevent people from starting.
You would find gruesome pictures on the pack of a cigarette but not on the pack of the 'beedi' because rich have the cigarette & poor have the 'beedi'
Government wants to mint revenue from the public
For rich it is the luxury and poor it is necessity.
If you don't want people smoking the dang thing, STOP SELLING/MAKING IT!!!!!!!
Ban the growth of tobacco, close the factories and stop the importation.

Are you a confident person? Or cocky? A douchebag? Proud? Or do you just have some swagger? I happen to believe in the power of swagger. And I believe that everyone should have some element of swagger aka confidence, balls, and a cool flame in order to -1. Survive - dangerous people will often...

The Australian Government are proposing legislation that will have ugly plain olive green packaging with no logo on cigarette packets.Anyone think that will work? I would have thought tackling the addiction would be better handles in other ways. The ugly packaging will not have much exposure in my...

Since they can take up to 20 seconds to appear, could an image such as an outline with text indicating what the whitespace is for be shown? It would prevent reader confusion and maybe help with the Google "Page Experience"
