There is a from post '2.2 Trillion in Waiting..' which is built around a quote attributed to Gene Sperling, Director of the National Economic Council. This is a full copy from that post including the quote -

"He [Sperling] revealed that Congress has "2.2 Trillion dollars sitting in the sideline for Congress to spend" ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!!!!!!!!!!!"

I questioned the accuracy of the quote - the first comments are mine. At that time it could have BEEN a mosquote and/or error. I have made plenty.

The author of the post defends the quote and claims the transcript is on CNN - but he never provides a link.

I have been to CNN and searched. The quote is not there.

This is the best example of Mccarthism I have seen on hubpages. The author wrote what he thinks (opinion) as fact and fabricated a quote from thin air to support the story.

Once it became obvious that McCarthy was a liar, he lost all power and respect in his forum, the Senate.

    So it should be here.

    A lie is a lie.

Dude AV posted the interview... and guess what Doug... you probrably want to apologize.

      http://transcripts.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/ … sa.01.html

"SPERLING: Yes. I'll give you two examples, which is one, we have $2 trillion sitting on the sideline in our economy right now. If we could give those companies, those investors the confidence that American can work past its divisions and get its house in order, I have no question that will increase more confidence in people making long-term investments, which means more construction, more job creation here in the United States."

Apologize, man.. you are really something else.

And what does it make you to put a topic up to be an ass about it? That is BS Doug... you are really something else... then to slur an American Patriot like Joesph McCarthy with your lie...

Your right about one thing, Doug... an excellent example of what went on with McCarthy, FACTS called lies by Leftists... you all haven't changed a bit.

But that is what I have come to expect on here... I post whole topics full of facts, and you exemplify the answers I, or anyone else dis-agreeing with you all, get.

And I see the posting of this Topic thread as a personal attack against the other party, Doug.

      It is just plain ignorant.

Sperling was talking about PRIVATE MONEY, exactly what I said in the first day in the second comment.

That lyin' hound dog said in the OP and for days afterward that this was money available to Congress.

"Congress has "2.2 Trillion dollars sitting in the sideline for Congress to spend"

I can supply a string of quotes from hound dog defending the original quote.... that Trillions are available to Congress.

This is not a detail - it's like the difference between making love and committing rape, which might appear the same thing to a wingnut.

You do not have a right to start a topic to call anyone a liar... as to the rest I found it in there... AVs perception of quote may be different than yours.

But the quote is in there and that is what I am sayin... the CNN page was right there.

There is no such thing as a "PERCEPTION OF A QUOTE". It is what it is, and changing it to present a new meaning is a lie.

The quote he provided today is VERY different from the quote in the OP. In fact, the quote recently provided disproves the ENTIRE PREMISE of the OP, which alleged that Congress has 2.2 Trillion on tap.

This goes to the political crises which the Teabaggers in the House have created with their extortion. The Tea Party is threatening the nation with a second Great Depression unless all their demands are met. They don't want the public at large to become angry, so they are spreading the story that nothing will happen if we default on the national debt or there is no need to default on the debt because the federal government has trillions on tap.

In this case, the propaganda was elevated to a deliberate lie. The quote in the OP is a massive, and in my opinion deliberate, distortion of what Sperling obviously said.

TMMasonposted 12 years agoin reply to this

There goes the deflection... teabaggers, McCarthy,  you called Av a liar saying the quote was a lie and the script did not exist, there it is.

  3. TMMason profile image60
    TMMasonposted 12 years ago

From what I see, he simply stated the 2 trillion was on the side lines, not whose it was. And the reference to "those Cos", seems to me to be referring back to those companies previously spoke of in the interview.

I see no lie or attempt at one... you're slinging dostortion and BS is all. You claimed the script didn't even exist... claimed AV was making the words up out if the thin air.

Same as the Left always does... BS.

    Apologize.

Your defense illustrates why McCarthy is one of the most loathed figures in American history.

Anyone who looks at the two quotes will see that AV changed the quote to create a new meaning, and rode that new meaning through the OP to attack the administration.

      With a lie.

A statement containing four components is false if ANY of the components is false.

Sort of like your lie about it not being on CNN...

Here are the Senate McCarthy Censure Hearing Records, have a nice read.... he was censured for insulting the other senators, not anyhting to do with his activities on his Committee investigating the infiltration of the American Govt.. Period. it is a matter of FASCT and on the records.

        http://www.senate.gov/artandhistory/his … report.pdf

Page 67 is conclusion and recomendations.

To Senator Hendrickson he, McCarthy, said.... "You are a living miracle, without brains or guts."

Oh yeah throw him out of the Senate for that... huh what a joke that censure you all throw around is. It had nothing to do with his activities exposing real treason and infiltration into our Govt., it had everyhting to do with getting him out to cease his exposing those Senators involved for what they were.

  4. TMMason profile image60

--"the committee based its recommendations on McCarthy's violation of Senate behavioral norms and took no position on his anticommunist crusade."--

So try again Doug. you just cannot tell the truth.

You all can twist it all you want, that committee didn't go near his investigations as they knew he had the FACTS on his side and they proved the guilt of all involved... including those members he called names... such as...

To Senator Hendrickson he said.... "You are a living miracle, without brains or guts."

Hahahahahaaaaaaaaaa... Yes lets censure him for that and forget all about the spies and Commies and Socialists who had infilltrated our Govt. He was censured for insulting the other Senators because they were just that, cowards and traitors who were hiding the truth about their traitorous friends.

Grow up and read a lil history Doug!

Doug... you went and started a whole topic on it... and you can not say it was an intentional lie. At best you both have two different readings of the quote. I stated I do not agree with your interpretation of it... so.

I just do not like the, whole topic on it, is all... that is just insulting.

You posted a video of Beck the other day and said it was him faking crying for his show... and it was not... and no one started a thread to call you a liar about it. Even though you insisted it was a video of Beck faking on his show, and it was a magazine shoot where they wanted him to do it...

It ain't right to go down that path dude.... and you took it to the next level creating the topic to put it out there.

          No, Mccarthite. To quote you,

"both have two different readings of the quote. I stated I do not agree with your interpretation of it..."

A quote is like a photograph. Two people can legitimately disagree with what the picture shows.

That's not what happened here. AV changed the quote, which is like altering a photograph, to present a fraud as if it was true evidence.

            The whole reading...

"At best you both have two different readings of the quote. I stated I do not agree with your interpretation of it... so."

You read it one way, she another. Too bad.

Do you know how to read?

See there is more lying... you take what you want from a sentence and leave the rest so as twist it...

AV changed the quote. That's beyond question because under pressure the hound dog finally presented the original quote.

That's akin to altering a photograph and presenting the phony as proof. It's a lie.

You do that all the time. You said I hate all Jews because they live in Palestine. That is a lie. You are guilty of defamation. I reported you, yet you are still here.
So much for your claims of liberal bias.

And, to my mind, American View OBVIOUSLY posted that quote as a means of bashing president Obama...and acted totally outraged --even putting his outrage IN CAPS.

I'm glad Doug made an issue out of it.....this kind of politics has to stop.
It's been a constant barage of Obama bashing for going on 3 and a half years now.

Truth doesnt matter, and opinion is repeated as fact: ie Obama hates America and Obama is a racist.

Yet, when anyone points out the malfesance of your great hero's, you people act like it's all water under the bridge.

This is by so-called patriots mind you. Where was their patriotic zeal from 2000-2008?
It was FOR the president then. Oh my oh myyyyyyyy, don't you DARE criticize elPresidente then.

So their hero screws the pooch totally up, and now they act all righteous and Howdy Doody.

This is Glenn Beck politics, 101.

But you know the old saying: stupid is as stupid does. Right mommy?

It was, at best, a mistaken interpretation.

    1. Doug Hughes profile image60
Doug Hughesposted 12 years agoin reply to this

Ps.... allow me to illustrate how you can legitimately interpret a statement in writing...

The president said that failing to raise the debt ceiling would have serious consequences.

No quotation marks. It's a legitimate interpretation.

      Now look at this example.

The president said, "If the Congress does not raise the debt ceiling, by the authority of the Constitution, 14th Amendment, Section 4, I am issuing an executive order to the Treasury Department instructing them the debt ceiling is raised, and they are authorized to act."

That would be a lie. Obama has not said that, though I wish he would. Putting quotes on a statement is a statement which says all the words in the quote happened in that sequence with no omission of words which would change the meaning.

    1. Doug Hughes profile image60

Yes, but in this case, linking to the original source showed that the original post was a gross distortion of what Sperling said.

Extending that distortion to create a false impression is a lie.

You saw a link to the Sperling quote which showed the quote in the OP was false.

Its interesting who is defending the distortion of the Sperling quote.

Far too many people are willing and eager to sacrifice factual, objective truth in attacks on the president or liberalism in general.
