When a Hub author selects "Comments must be approved before they appear" in their comments capsule, you as the commenter don't have the opportunity to preview or edit your comment once you click "Submit".
You do have that opportunity when the author doesn't select that option.
It would be good to have that flexibility of review under all circumstances. I've made plenty of errors, or had second thoughts on comments I've made, and then clicked "Submit", thinking I'd get a chance to review and possibly change my comment.
We don't get any warning that a Hubber has this feature enabled.
So, please, either give us a warning or enable an edit function.
Great observation. I've added this to our to-do list.
Great suggestion!
I guess I have only posted on Hubs where comments had to be approved. -- I was not aware that the editing feature was possible for comments on other Hubs.
I'm not sure what the default comment capsule's features are when you join HP. Perhaps the default is that you will allow comments on your Hub only after you approve them. It's been a long time since I've been a newb! And, I don't have any secondary accounts.
But I'm surprised that you haven't experienced that ability to edit one of your comments before it evaporates into the ozone. You get five minutes to fix it.
I agree. I always check my comments carefully but I’m sometimes surprised when I actually see them displayed on the screen and realize that I didn’t express something very well. I would love to be able to edit the comments instead of immediately seeing them disappear for approval.
I may have misunderstood what you meant originally. oops - oh, well.
My misunderstanding probably came from the fact that I don't comment as much as I should () and had not noticed the correlation between the edit function (which, yes, I have seen) and the author's choice of pre-approving comments or not.
I do still like your suggestion, though!
That's what I thought...I was sure you had experienced that edit business.
That's odd. Is this a new development? I'm sure I've edited comments in the past after getting a message that my comment might not be visible until the author has approved it.
I don't see the logic of blocking edits. If the message doesn't appear until it's been approved, that will nearly always be after the expiry of the 5-minute editing window, so it doesn't allow people to game the system.
I have the "must approve" setting on my hubs. I don't want spammers to get free temporary exhibition space!
I noticed that when I went to comment on your Hubs.
Off the topic a bit here, but I find that refusal to show a comment as made is kind of, well, not too friendly. I understand it when someone is writing controversial Hubs (it's a way of deflecting flaming stuff) or Hubs that are only there to make sales (it's a way of not getting into a conversation when you only want to make bucks).
But your Hubs are entirely engaging and scream out for conversation. If you find a spammer or scammer who makes a comment you don't like, then just deny the comment; meanwhile, please open up your engaging topics for all of us to put in our two cents or pence. Love your stuff.

Is it only me, or are there others who think that it should be a common courtesy to reply to comments made to a hub. I always reply to comments made by my followers and others, and people who I follow do the same. I have noticed however, that some hubbers have comments left on their page, and they...

Do you continue to comment on an author's hubs when you can't edit your comment?I just commented on a hub, then decided to add a sentence. My comment showed on-screen, but when I clicked on EDIT, I wasn't allowed to change my comment or even delete it. I can't see the benefit to a hub author in...

Some comments I make on hubs are immediately unapproved - why?In two instances, I made a comment on a hub that didn't appear; it just said it had to be approved by the author first, and it thanked me for participating in the HubPages community. When I looked at my activity on my profile page, it...
