Christmas should be a chance a person to change his life for a better cause. But unfortunately this has been a chance to celebrate with parties spending a lot and wasting a lot of food stuffs in a world where there are people die of hunger. We do not seem to follow Jesus's message correctly. Do we?
I'm curious...what kind of better cause do you think a person should be changing to? And what is it about Christmas that would make them do that? And what would you consider to be Jesus' message. Sorry for all the questions...I just find it really interesting how different people perceive Christmas and it's meaning
Hi Firefly - You can light the world (as you are a firefly). Like for the firefly, we also have been given some talents to use in this world (if we multiply it, we can be saints - living saints).
OK. When I was in a Retreat program, one fellow asked what was your plan. I said I wanted to be a professor for life science. He asked what do you want to do for that. I said MSc PhD and some more. I need time and I want to dedicate a lot. Then he suggested why I was not trying to be a saint. I was amazed. But it is possible. We have been created similar to God as per the Genesis. You can make miracles if you believe god's power (mustod seed parable).
So you believe that christmas is a reminder to pursue a better life, a more saint-like life, because of the celebration of Christ's existence, on that day?
btw I like the firefly analogy hadn't thought of it like that..
Actually our priests are always preach like that. Christmas is the right time to do good things and change for a better cause. Im in Sri Lanka I don't know what is preached in US churches.
I don't go to church...but...Idk. I guess I feel that I don't want to wait until Christmas to start giving. I want it to be something I do all the time. Maybe that's why holidays such as Christmas and Thanksgiving don't really have much special meaning to me...because the principles they embrace are things that I try to remember all the time...but they are good reminders I guess
Great! I agree with you 100% and I love to see that you are already done!
I wrote a hub on effective donation. But it is not possible to publish. They say it needs revisions. But I wrote what I have understood. otherwise I could lead you to that. make sure what you do is effective! best regards
Most of us are used to celebrate our special occations in a mean of a party. when the party is over nothing is left. Sometimes dirts with drunkness. Yes some cheers too.
But if we can use that expenses for the education of a downtrodden child somewhere in the world, he would rise from the dust. Will give you much credits from his heart. God will definitely see it and reward you. At the time of your donation, you can be happy that you give your helping hand to a mostly needy one.
I have done so. And Im really happy to note that one of them is a teacher now and is earning better than me. At the same time, he does help many as he knows the real gravity of poverty.
Christmas is a very special opportunity to do that as God asks what space your heart has for him. If you helped some one who can't pay you back, will be a space for God to.
Everyday is a chance to change ones life for the better. Give what you can when you can is useful.
I was actually thinking of the meaning of the holiday season in America last week. I don't know if people realize it, or not, but the 'Peace, Good Will' theme that runs from Thanksgiving through the Winter Solstice holidays of all of the religions and culminates on New Years Day is one tenth of our year. We have the opportunity to tithe ten percent of our lives to our fellow man in love and bon homie. I think it is incredibly symbolic and beautiful.
I don't care what anyone's beliefs are when it comes to religion. If we all took the darkest days of the year and used them to remind the world we understand that the light of love for each other is as important to the soul as the light of the sun is to our bodies; I think the rest of the year would be better for us all. And that's the spirit I see shining through in America during the holidays.
We are lucky here the sun is shining. Its spring and by the time christmas is here its summer.
I do agree with your sentiments though. Very beautiful.
I forgot about you guys down under. Topsy Turvey, as far as that goes for you. Do you guys have a winter celebration you've adopted from the indigenous peoples?
Hehe no winter celebration that I am aware of. I am indigenous and we had no celebrations till lately... Apparently we have a different new year???
I always wondered about the importance of the solstice to some of the ancients. Whatever ancient culture I'm the product of probably didn't pay any attention either. If it were up to me to come up with an opinion on the cause of the changing of the days I don't think I could have thought up a lot of the ideas that were passed down. The best I would have come up with for cold and darkness was sh*t happens, or something useless like that.
Haha you made me laugh big time!!! Yep I'm with you I'm not as creative as the ancients.

I would like to hear your ideas in regards to changing the name of the "Christmas" season to something more appropriate so as to lose the concept of gaining converts and power in the name of Jesus.Perhaps, we should go back to the name, "Yule"
