How Many Different Forms Does Praying Take?

   Something I've been wondering about today.....Obviously many religions have different formal prayers but also people have been known to dedicate songs, awards, almost anything to another person. Is this a form of praying for the other person ?
   My own thoughts on the type of healing that I practice are that it is a form of prayer.
   
   I'm defining prayer very loosely here as "wishing something positive for another person or yourself and doing something to indicate that wish"
   
   any thoughts?

      Hindu philosophy of prayers or mantras are to do with vibrations.
      Everything is vibrating at different levels.By chanting a particular mantra or prayer you are tapping into that vibration, which causes not only an external but internal change as well.These mantras are to be repeated at least 108 times in order to have the proper affect.You are basically connecting with the different cosmic forces around you and in you.

   I'm thinking also in terms of sending flowers to someone who is recovering from an operation or illness. Using my broad definition that would also be considered a form of prayer because there is a thought component and an action component involved.
   
   You are right of course this will develop into a hubpage at some point.

   Do you know why it would be 108 times that the mantra should be repeated? Where does this number come from?
   
   My first thought is 9 times 12 but it could also be 3 times 36
   
   Is there a time limit ? should it be 108 times in a specific period of time? Too many questions, sorry  but I'm wondering whether the mathematics of prayer would also make an interesting hub.It might also give the more rational part of us something to connect with as well as the intuitive side.

      The reason being 108 is when the effect takes place, anything less and you haven't really changed the vibration in and around you ,it takes time.It is also considered as a divine number.

      Where time is concerned there is no said period.In fact there are two ways to say a mantra one aloud and the other mentally, the latter is considered more powerful.
      I often say mantras and the more I relax and concentrate on it the longer it takes.Inhale with one and exhale with the other.
      ex. om namo shiva-inhale and again om namo shiva exhale.Each breath gets longer with time and practice. It can take you into a trance, get connected with the cosmos.

   I've done some buddhist chanting, and some mongolian overtone chanting in the past. With your permission, I'll try the shiva mantra you mentioned and see how it feels to me.
   
   there is something positive about chanting in a group - even seperated by time zones and thousands of miles.
   
   I'm fond of the Gayatri Mantra and have spent time chanting that also in the past.

      Dear Dennis,
      You are shiva ,I am no one to give  permission to chant  this mantra,its for all humans. Start with om namo shiva then go to shiv ho hum when you are ready.
      Gayatri mantra is considered to be very powerfull.Since you are a reiki master you do understand energies and will like these mantras
