   Please don't insult my intelligence dear president. You are seriously bragging about coal production being up and jobs in coal up 10% in OHIO! Bragging about how his administration has IMProved in Ohio! Wanna talk about over 15,000 layoffs in KY alone! Alpha Coal in WV laid off 1200 sept 18th and Patriot Coal 250. Who knows the percentage of WV coal miners without a job now... go blow smoke up somebody's else's ass Dude. We're not smoking the same stuff.

      Contrary to your observations, The National Mining Association published the trend in coal mining jobs based upon data from the US Bureau of Labor statistics. About 78,600 jobs went into decline after 1999 but turned around in 2004-2005 to grow steadily to a high of 86,200 jobs in 2011. That represents an increase of more than 9.7 percent in 12 years and more than 4,700 new jobs during the present administration. {1} Coal miners actually did pretty well under President Obama.
      
      Naturally, 2012 layoffs are not reflected in these numbers. To understand what is happening you have to research other causes.
      West Virginia Republican Rep. Shelley Moore Capito explained this week that the declining price of natural gas was one of several reasons resulting in mine closures.
      
      In addition, production efficiency in Appalachia is a major reason that production is shifting to the west. Did you know, View, Montana has about 1000 coal miners that produce more coal than Virginia’s 5,262 miners produce? In fact, the situation is worse than that. “Wyoming (with 5,837 coal miners) produces more coal than West Virginia, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Alabama, and Illinois combined (with a total of 58,995 coal miners). Due to this discrepancy, the coal mining industry has increasingly moved production to these Western states (especially to the Powder River Basin), and has dramatically cut its workforce in Appalachia.” {2} Coal mining jobs are moving west, View, and this, too, is not the President’s doing.
      
      Surely you know global warming and clean air are hot button issues in this country. The National Mining Association estimated in September 2011 that 1.24 million NEW jobs would NOT materialize because of environmental resistance to building new coal based power plants.
      
      While I sympathize with the plight of unemployed miners, I see few reasons to blame the President and dozens of reasons why the coal mining industry on a whole is not the dynamic economic engine it was a hundred years ago.

         I see your  point, however the President's power over the EPA has closed mines not being able to get permits.  In Obama's own words"they can build coal plants and I'll bankrupt them all"

      Welcome to hubpages, but most folks don't like coal. Your biggest coal customer is China, and if Romney succeeds in pissing off China, your customer may go elsewhere. I cannot understand why West Virginians think Romney is good for coal.
      
      Natural gas, for the USA, is cleaner and in massive supply. It is safer to "mine". Coal has a place, but probably a diminished one. No one is happy that your people are losing jobs in this field. The technology for clean coal may not be here yet. I am sure that when it gets here coal will be mined bigtime.

         It would take Billions of dollars and years to get to where Obama wants it..  With the President's new EPA it's impossible to get permits to open the mines, thus it's going to China instead of our homeland just so some may work.  West Virginia and KY are for Romney, it means jobs for our men, food on the table, and health insurance for our children.  We had all this before the EPA rules.
         Coal is what keeps the lights on.  Coal mining is a way of life here and has been for decades.
         So the next time you turn on your "LIGHTS" remember were it came from, and stop to thank the men that go underground to get it for you.

            I understand your position. In fact, we need to figure out how to mine coal in a clean way before the producers of industry decide to export all the gas, and the oil from the Midwest, the WTI. Once all this is exported, Americans will pay a lot more for energy.

               With the resurfacing of the mines, they are left in Better condition than when they arrived.  The silk ponds on the job release clean drinkable water.  These are facts the public is unaware of.

   The biggest coal customer is China because Soros with the aid of Obama and the EPA is running the small producer out of the market.  China will pay big money for coal because their own reserves are well under 50 years remaining while their coal mining industry is in shambles.  80+% of the electrical needs are supplied by coal.  Soros knows this and he has invested heavily in major coal operations and also in a coal export operation at the Port of Los Angeles.  Obama is simply a pawn making sure the EPA and other agencies insure that coal is not a viable resource to be harvested by the small producers leaving the field clear for Soros and company.  Mr. Romney is pro-coal and still sees its benefits not only at the jobs level but as a viable and affordable resource.  The only people who want coal out of America stand to make a monetary profit from that reality.  ~WB
