Please feel free to comment on his passing.

Pretty good President, the economic figures of Venezuela speak for themselves not to mention poverty reduction etc. That is why he was wildly popular in Venezuela and not only with leftists, what he did worked and no one can argue with results.

Probably shouldn't have gone to Cuba for his treatment, Michael Moore wasn't truthful.

Yo Micheal Moore made that movie about medicine in Cuba. Many Cuban doctors got up and walked out because they knew it was a lie.

According to this our cancer treatment isn't as good because we detect cancer earlier?

No, not "isn't as good", just not better!

Or is that too hard for you to see? You diagnose a cancer in 2004 and the patient dies in 2010 isn't actually any better than a diagnose in 2006 and a death in 2010. It just slews the five year survival rates.

Chavez was a totalitarian who used the premise of corruption in the country's government as his fulcrum to gain office only to continue that corruption himself on a more grand scale....just as his mentor, Castro, did in Cuba.  Much of the private sector was nationalized and those assets apparently went into the Chavez family pocket accounting for his 2 billion dollar plus wealth.  Overall the people top to bottom became poorer and the numbers in dire poverty grew higher while he grabbed his wealth.  When one has amassed over two billion in assets and claims to be a man of the people...well, at what point does he share such wealth with those people who need it.  Instead he asked them to use water sparingly as well as electricity.  This is one of the the richest oil nations on earth and the people are all but rationed water and electricity.  Now that such a "Great Leader (sic)" has passed what will those poor people do? To hear the publishers our the U.S. media rags tell it....his greatness can never be replaced.  And how great he must have been if Obama broke down crying at the news of Chavez's and sequestered (bad choice of words) himself in privacy for the day to mourn.  To bad he cannot have the same emotion for some one who promotes capitalism, free enterprise, and democracy.  But then again, what can one expect from a man raised and mentored by socialist and communist.  ~WB

So a minority even though he was dying of cancer in a country that has elected him with big margins repeatedly. But I am sure you are correct, the wealthy of Venezuela are more than eager to resume exploiting poor Venezuelans they are very much the minority however. It will be interesting to see if they do regain power how long it will take for poverty to reach pre-Chavez levels.

The sort of leftist nationalism represented by the President Chávez predates the appearance of Lenin on the political scene a century ago.

From a Latin American perspective, it was US Administrations such as that of FDR which had a particular track record of respecting the sovereignty of their republics.

What many in the US see simply as the strident legacy of Mr Chávez is actually deeply rooted historically, although the extent of its vehemence is not inevitable.

From a Canadian perspective, given the deep-seated historical background to Venezuela's foreign policy, it is sometimes hard to see why a US Admininstration might seemingly prefer in the longer term to rely on oil resources from that country in preference to what would be readily available from Canadian pipelines.

I work with a guy from Venezuela. Under Chavez their land and two of their cars were taken away without explanation. He managed to leave and wouldn't dream of living anywhere but here. His family won't speak to him because he lives here voluntarily now.

Did you ever see the movie Valkyrie? It was about the conspiracy amongst some of Hitler's senior staff to assassinate him and the subsequent failed attempt. At one point after the explosion they believed they had succeeded and sent out messages. There is a scene in a communications center when all these teletypes start printing out "Hitler ist tot."(Hitler is dead)
The workers there who were mostly women began weeping. Now that is natural because many of them had lived their lives with Hitler and didn't know any difference. They didn't comprehend what he was doing to the world. They learned later.
It will be the same in Venezuela.

I just read a post by a friend on Facebook mourning the loss of a good man and a good president.  Having travelled in Venezuela and talked to many people I know this to be a load of crap.  It was as simple as telling the world that he represents something different from the norm, different from the mega powers to convince the liberal media and liberal readers without them even bothering to scratch below the surface.
He has left Venezuela in a state where it's essentially fucked for generations and where any incoming government is doomed to fail.

People who want to be able to buy basic food essentials like cooking oil, milk, butter etc. for a fair price instead of having to pay 10 times more on the black market because the country somehow keeps running out.  People who want a police force and army who work for the interests of the population and not in the interests of themselves and of a man who (when alive) made their lives very good.  People who want a REAL education with actual job prospects both within and outside of their country.
