There are many types of parenting styles as there are people. For example, there are ENLIGHTENED parents who believe that children are individual beings in their own right. These are the parents who believe that they are here to guide their children to be the individual persons that they were meant to be. They are the parents who believe in myriad choices for their children and let them BE.

There are DEMOCRATIC parents who believe that children are to be intelligently taught to be eventual decision makers and to be independent. They believe that children are also individuals with their own needs and wants.Democratic parents' approach to parenting are logical and rational. They explain to their children as to the why and whens. They do not believe in arbitrary rules and in blind obedience. They portend that such things only psychological cripple their children.

There are OVERCONTROLLING parents who believe that children must be raised strictly and with control systems in order to become civilized and acceptable people. Such parents contend that if children were "left to their own devices", they would be totally unmanageable. They maintain that by deciding many aspects of their children's lives, their children will benefit in the long run. They are of the school that children do not have the reasoning to effectively decide their lives and that is why THEY, the parents, are here so to speak.

Then there is the AUTHORITARIAN or AUTOCRATIC parents who believe that their children are THEIRS.They feel that their children are subordinate and inferior because they are childiren. They believe that their children are blank slates and their appendages to mold to THEIR will. The idea that their children are individual beings are total anathemas to them.Their mantra is that their children will OBEY or else.........
The enlightened parent are becoming more commonplace in the 21st century and the authoritarian parent is thankfully becoming a dinosaur.  The majority of parents can be classified as somewhat democratic who believe that children have a viable voice in the household and in family affairs. They also believe that their children should question authority, use criticial thinking, and to be their own persons. These parents usually have happier and less rebellious children than children who grow up in more rigid households.

Again, there are different types of parenting as there are people. However, some are beneficial where others are downright crippling.  Let's discuss this.

I think that parents should be democratic. I hate overcontrolling and authoritarian parents. Kids must be brought up as their friends.

gmwilliams, I am an enlightened parent according to your categories. I like the term you coined. I am calling myself an intuitive parent and I use my intuition to guide me throughout the process of parenting. I think you even defined the enlightened parent exactly the way I define myself, I see my children as unique beings and my role is to guide them to become who they came to be in this life. I am actually writing a book about it right now. Since it is not allowed to post links or promote myself I won't include the link to my website but if you are interested send me a private message.

+1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000-parents must always have a totally accessible relationship with their children.  Children are more comfortable being around parents who respect and nurture their individuality.  Sadly, some parents strongly insist that their children be replicas of them.
