Non-sequiter comments

   I am getting a lot of comments from an anonymous commenter that have nothing to do with my hubs. For instance, my hub about a wind chime manufacturer has this comment:
   
   "wow that is MAGIC. i did it. i shutdown the cemtupor. i removed the power cord, i did not remove the battery. i held down option, command, p and r and then pressed the power button. i kept down the option, command, p and r until i hear the chime three times and then i released, allowing the cemtupor to come back on. and like MAGIC, THERE IT WAS. it recognized my airport card. thanks

   They don't seem to have links-- but the comments are random.

      Well, the IP Address is from Australia, I can tell you that much. Specifically, South Melbourne, Victoria.

         They are all "anonymous" and have different ip numbers

      Remember they get a link in their name, that's good enough for them. 
      
      Spammers are trying to con people into accepting comments by making them longer.  I'm getting them on my blogs too.

            Yes, I guess they're all over the place. One of those ones you listed above is from Columbus, Ohio; another one from Baltimore, Maryland; the other one from Mexico . The first one was Australia, other side of the world. I don't really know what it all means. Is it the same message from all those different IP addresses? Not that I would know what that means either, just curious. If the same message, though, implies they're from the same network of some sort. Which I guess is likely. But I don't really know all the tricks played on the Internet. I understand IP addresses can be manipulated, but I don't really understand what that means or how it is done; or, not totally, why; except in some cases it's to give the illusion of traffic, I believe. I guess another reason is to make it look like something coming from different sources rather than one.

               Since my last post I have seven more all from a poster called "anonymous"-- a few are repeated ip's-- but all unrelated messages.
               Nobody else has these?

               No all of the messages are different ( usually about 100-140 words) and appear to be  specific replies to some other posting on a totally different subject. The only similarity seems to be the 'user name' "anonymous".

   Hi Rochelle, It's quite a rule of thumb that any comments that do not have any connection to your article or hub, just ignore or delete it.  There are lots of spammers out there.  Not only these kinds of comments would not look nice but would spare you from being spammed.  Just my two cents.

   I saw a comment on someone's hub awhile back, it was nothing but a bunch of letters put together, no words at all. I wondered what it was.

   It is spam, so deny it and mark it as spam--that will help keep it off other hubs.

   That is how spam works. They have different I.P. addresses all of the time so that you cannot find them.
   I have viewed them in my email through their header and seen who it is from, etc.

   Wow, that is really strange! I don't think I have ever had anything drastically off-topic as a comment, although one time I had one that I had to read through a few times to understand what they were trying to say.

    I had one very similar, initially their comment seemed completely unrelated to my content and then they dropped a link (not a live link) which was pertinent to the topic of the hub. I just deleted it, I actually take great pleasure in censoring spammers.

       When the comment comes in you get to chose whether to 'Approve' or 'Deny' it. Simply click on 'Deny' and that will delete it. In other words it will not be allowed to appear on your Hub.

    I have had a similar issue this week. I went away on holiday and came back to 72 comments! I was amazed I usually get 5 a week max unless I have put out a new hub, so was very surprised. When I actually started looking at them they were a bit odd. Some where clearly spam and just gibberish, but others sound like they could have been a geuine comment, but then said some odd statements in the middle. All 72 were from 'guest users' everyone had a different name but all had come in during 2 points in time. 1 day ago then 10 hours ago (that has changed now). I am still working my way through them deleting them if they are clearly spam, but it was very odd, this hasn't happened to be before, I have had the odd spam comment but nothing lik ethis before.

    It is my opinion that it is a spam business looking for new places to post. I think they try out places by dropping "obvious" spam to see if it is picked up, deleted or left alone and if it is "allowed" or not removed, then they post more spam. If it gets removed quickly or not allowed to show, then they move on and try elsewhere.
    
    On another forum, one "company" posted some of those comments that you occasionally get from a newbie but more often from someone trying to spam. The comments were totally harmless, completely on point but of no use whatsoever! That particular forum requires posters to have 5 posts before they can add a "sig" and this person posted the 5 comments and then added their "sig" - it was a link to a company that specialises in posting to forums (fora) so you can get a backlink to your site! So, forums get spammed with newbie looking posts of no value to members at all, so someone can get their backlink without having to take the trouble to write the posts themselves. That forum does not mind people having links in their "sig" (provided they are family friendly) but it seems a bit much to expect a forum to allow a link to a "business" that will just let more useless posts be made!

       There wasn't a link so I really dont know why they are doing it, and others have actually looked like they have taken the comment off another site entirely and there are names mentioned and they seem to be making a relevant comment but about something entirely different to my hub. Its really odd!
