I made one of the best hubs I've ever made, near 1100 word's, has 3 pictures, amazon capsules and it's well-written and it's not passing for quality. What else do I need?

    1. ChristinS profile image38
ChristinSposted 10 years agoin reply to this

I notice you say amazon capsules - plural.  Try removing some of the capsules.  Only place one capsule if it's extremely relevant and do it on the side near the product you mention. Multiple amazon/ebay capsules will get you on quality too.

Also, make sure your images are high-quality and either your own or properly attributed.

Hi ChristinS. What is the best way to attribute images: letting the url be visible or hyperlinking the url to "photpin" or "morgueFile" etc? I've read the directions in the learning center. I've seen it done so many different ways. I assume I'm doing it correctly but still confused.

How I do it is put your own caption beneath that says what the picture is
Widget One or whatever. Use your own description, unless the photo license specifically states you have to use their title. If that's the case, then place their required title on the first line.

Beneath that , on the hub it will say "source" Here you place a link to the page/image itself and then title the hyperlink so it might say Source: Morguefile  but then the word Morguefile is linked to the original source. The exception would be if the photographer requires you to list them on any public work then your second line might say "John Doe courtesy of Morguefile" or something to that effect.

Okay, I've been doing it right. Unless I use my own image, I use public domain share-alike photos 99% of the time. Sometimes if a photographer's name is within the url, I'll put that on the top line, e.g, "Morguefile - Photo by Ann." Thank you very much, CristinS.

I spread them out (3) and I used proper photo's, using them from freedigitalphotos and I cited them how I'm suppose to. I tried publishing again this morning it's 3 now still pending so we'll see how it goes.

I used to be so anti-video, thought it sacrilegious to dare crowd out the message of the text with a bunch of visual media. I especially hated the idea of videos with poems. I have since added several videos to my poems and recipe hubs. Take a moment to rethink it and see how the right video may enhance your work rather than cheapen it. Or maybe not! It's a totally different way of thinking regarding online writing and presentation.

I don't know. Today, I read a poorly written hub by a fairly new hubber. By any standards, the hub should not have been allowed to be published. The hub had poor grammar and punctuation. Some of the sentences were unfinished. I had a difficult time reading the hub. Then, I read from writers with excellent skills complain about their hubs being unpublished. I'm so confused.

    7. Aneegma profile image70
Aneegmaposted 10 years agoin reply to this

You may want to add a video (preferably your own) and your word count should be above 1250. Basically if you add all the capsules when you're publishing your hub then its likely to be a high featured hub. Also always check for plagiarism before you publish. Sometimes you may write good article but if some of the content sounds similar or the same as other contents then your hub will be rejected.

Hubs can either sink or swim. Try adding more to it. A couple of paragraphs can help it get featured. I added one paragraph to a hub they wouldn't even let me publish and it became a featured hub.

You know what buddy?  A lot of times I just hit resubmit after changing a word or two and the score flies up.  I think it has to do with the peer review/ hub hopping aspect.  Someone just might not like your topic and you might need a better draw.  Don't take it personally (although I know it's hard not to).  Some of the stuff I write is politically incorrect and controversial so at first view it won't get accepted, then it will be featured with a high score on second submission.  Usually a poll or quiz will do the trick for me if that doesn't work.

  5. BigJulesMags profile image69
    BigJulesMagsposted 10 years ago

Also three pics is a little low for a hub this long.  A few more wouldn't hurt your cause.  They really seem to be hyping the multimedia recently.

I am going to guess with everything you have added / done it is going to be a spelling and/or grammar related issue. That happens to all of us at times. I would suggest having someone proofread it for you to see if you are missing something.  Another trick can be to read your hub aloud (or any writing you do) to see if it "sounds" right. That can often clue you in to places where your wording may be a little off.

It is important when writing hubs to follow proper spelling and grammar rules if you want them to be featured. Poor grammar and spelling bring the whole site down which is why HP is cracking down on that.  In your comment above for example "there changed" should be "they're" they are... not nitpicking, but showing you how some words that sound alike are very different smile - it can make all the difference in getting your work accepted.  I like you and want to see you succeed with your hubs, but you have to be willing to take constructive criticism if you really want help smile.  It's not personal.  Hope it makes it this time! If not and you are comfortable you can send it to me privately and I can go through it for you and send it back - perhaps it would help?

ChristinS, I really admire you for being willing to take the time to help another hubber. I am a former editor and the one thing I help people realize is that it is difficult to edit our own work. It's because our brain knows what we meant by what we wrote, so sometimes it shows us what we meant instead of what we actually wrote. It happens to me, too. When self-editing, the best thing to do is to put the work aside for a day or two and then go back to edit it. Or, as you suggested, let someone else read it and edit it for you.

If you want your hubs to be accepted, USE PROPER GRAMMAR!  It's amazing how many times you forget to capitalize or use an apostrophe where there shouldn't be one or have awkward transitions or even blatant misspellings.  It seriously looks like you take quantity over quality, and that is the wrong way to go.

HollieTposted 10 years agoin reply to this

It isn't that you have broken any rules, at least, none that I'm aware of. However, and I'm not saying this to be mean, your grammar, spelling and punctuation need some serious work.

You write as if you're texting. Whilst you say that 'you like to write in your own way' this site has been heavily penalised for poor quality content, amongst other things, and, as such, the writers on this site who do write well and have put a lot of effort into their work, have lost earnings.

HP is attempting to improve the overall quality of content, which, after having read some of your hubs, is *probably* why your hub has not been featured. I'm not just talking about a few typos, we're all guilty of those, but you really do need to re-write them- or they'll no doubt be unfeatured at a later date.

HollieTposted 10 years agoin reply to this

It's not personal. It's just that we've been having so many problems with Google penalties that we have to make sure that content is up to scratch. It's good that you want to go over them. Keep a dictionary and/or thesaurus with you when you re-write them- I'm not being patronising here, even seasoned writers will have one or both to hand. The more that you write, and re-read and correct, the more you'll learn and the better your writing will become.

Let's see if HP notice this.

I have rarely read such a load of pompous twaddle in my life.  Incoherent insults veiled as advice.
Yes, lets see if the mods pick up on it.

Perhaps they will also move half a dozen other 'fun' threads to somewhere more appropriate.

This area is supposed to be for help and advice.  Occasionally even real information not some playground.  Perhaps it is time for another hilarious meme.

Just keep going into it and slightly change it eg change a couple of words.  It will probably get featured soon

Hubpages is trying to filter out the junk on it's site by directing all of the traffic to featured hubs.  I have 8 featured right now, but I'm working on many more.  If you have mistakes in your hubs or low quality images you can definitely expect for it to not be featured, because Hubpages wants their hubs to be mint.  We've been having trouble with low quality hubs and google is sending less people to us through their search engines and it is hurting the revenue of all hubbers.  A guy I talked to was making 20 bucks a day off of Hubpages and he is now making around 2 dollars a day.  Hubbers just need to work on making more quality hubs.  My goal now is to make nothing but featured hubs.  I only have a total of like 25 hubs, but from now on when I write a hub, I expect it to be featured.  If not I'm going to re-edit it so it will live up to the standards. I just hope HP can get out of this recession.  I would like to actually make money off of this site one day.

You can have all your hubs featured, that doesn't mean they're being read.  I have hubs with scores in the 90s that only get 3 views a day.

That is the difference between meeting HubPages standards and pleasing Google Search's constantly evolving requirements and also being able to second guess what the online searchers want to read about.  I have n't a hope of achieving all of those, so I just write what I want and let the people who want to read me find me.  Some of the high earners left after the 'Big Bad Panda' rolled through here years ago.

I read somewhere from some stat-head that his theory was when a hubber chooses a specific niche, like a blogger, google liked them better and they developed a more loyal following.  I looked at your hubs and you're a little like me in that you enjoy a wide array of subjects.  Unfortunately, I think that's what's kicking our tails in.

Tbh, my sub's doing ok at the moment, no doubt because it's a new sub. Mostly I write about conservation issues, but I've thrown in a bit of WW2- God knows why. lol

I don't really know the answers, some think a niche account is the way to go, and others disagree. Your sub could start to do well though, at any given time. Google's a strange beast. And it's only two weeks old, I've just noticed- so give it some time. You might be pleasantly surprised!

Your just a little troll eh. I've never understood the mindset of one, you do a countdown as a threat and because no-one listened to you, you flag me. Yeah clearly helping buddy that's just you doing your trolling. On top of it like a low dude you purposely thumbs down my work and try giving it the worst ratings you can get when it's excellent knowledge that could change someones life. SOOO pathetic, hubpages needs a block button so you can't even know I'm on here.

If your ambition is to write a Wiki page then I guess they might be important but for peeling potatoe's and selling toa'sters?

I have over 25 "featured" hubs and most of them have a 60 something hub score. I have hubs that are not featured yet have a higher score, this is confusing to me and I want to know how this is determined.

Just run it through a grammar check and you will be featured.  The most recent one, first paragraph suggestions.  Like there's no tomorrow is what you are trying  to say I think.  Last sentence of the same paragraph, your should be you're.  Stuff like that will get you flagged, although the comments to this should get you enough reads for a while.  Good luck with Hubpages and welcome.
