So in university a bibliography is probably one of the most important things to remember, but is it the same with hubpages and do we get a lower rank if we don't reference our work?
Google cannot read..... The algorithm would not know if you have put relevant references to your work unless you include them as links to other webpages.
The algorithm will however assess the links that you have put, should you link to what Google thinks of as a bad neighborhood or irrelevant pages then you could be penalized. Whether linking to a respected site actually helps is open to debate......
BUT
The important thing is not the rank! It is would including the references help your reader.
If they will benefit your reader then you should use them.
This may help your rank as reader behavior is used by Google in some ways, so if readers follow your links rather than heading back to the search results it will help you! If readers share your work because they think it is well written and comprehensive it will help.. etc..
Actually, Google can read. That's the entire basis for search engines.
However, how the algorithms and programming on the Google end interprets the words on a web page is markedly different from how people read and comprehend and at this time, a list of references will not have an effect on the robot spiders that visit your web page.
But such sources might have a significant impact on your human visitors, and those sorts of actions are exactly the sort of thing that then does have an impact on search engines.
Good luck!

I've experienced a significant surge in traffic from Google in the past few days. Just wondering if anyone else is experiencing the same thing? Hope it's not a nine-day wonder.
