I do not understand what we are supposed to do with regards to writing for the upcoming increase in mobile traffic.  When we are talking "full width", are we talking about capsules that go all the way from left to right without ads or photos beside them?  Are we talking big photos rather than small ones located to the right on a capsule.  I am really confused about this.  Also, can we edit already published hubs to meet this criteria if necessary?  Finally, is there ever an end to these constant upgrades and changes?  They are driving me crazy!

I have checked my iPhone, and all my half width photos are full width, as is the text. As long as I have plenty of text capsules with titles, it looks just fine. I do not see what else I need to do, except check a few older hubs.

I interpreted this to mean best not to right float any capsules. By leaving everything at full width you will be editing as it will be viewed on a mobile device. If you do float right a capsule it will automatically move above the adjoining capsule when viewed in mobile. I am re-editing my old hubs into full width. I noted in G analytics that search traffic is now over 50% from mobile.

I agree with what Colleen said about full width capsules, but the only change might be that the photos may not appear in the proper order. In the future, I will set up my hubs in that way, but I do not plan on going back and changing all of my old hubs.

Relache:  I read the blog prior to posting my questions here, but I did not totally understand what Paul was saying about how articles will look on mobile devices in terms of set up, photos, polls, etc.

I agree with Colleen and DrMark. You can leave your older hubs as they are now, but your half-width capsules may not appear in the order you would have preferred. For example, a poll or quiz may move up above the text box it is referring to. Same with photos.

Technology is constantly changing and HubPages is doing its part to keep up with the trends. Change is the only constant. Everyone needs to get used to it and adapt to users' needs.

I have viewed a couple of mine, both published and not published, and that is the only difference that I notice. The capsules do not appear side-by-side on the Mobile Preview. They are above/below each other.

      Sooo  what happens with photos?

They do not seem to change any other than being shown full size, and it seems the same with videos. Any capsule(s) that you have side-by-side is probably going to be shown above/below each other on mobiles. It seems as if we do not do anything since it does it itself.

I've simply viewed how my hubs look on mobile devices to see if I need to make changes. Everything is automatically displayed on mobile at full width, including text capsules with incidental/additional information that I've floated to the right. These look fine, as long as they're shaded (blue or gray) and headed with something like 'Tip' or 'By the Way' to make it absolutely clear that they are extra bits of info.

As I understand it, Paul basically just advises us to bear mobile in mind when laying hubs out. That means we should make sure new hubs look good in mobile from the outset, and check in case older hubs need adjusting.

OK  So here's the next question:  Would having more than one photo or video slow down loading time or interrupt reading continuity to the point that a mobile device user would not want to read articles because it would take too long??

I did not view from a mobile site, it may be different, but loading into my Preview site seemed to take the same amount of time for Mobile Preview as it did for Desktop Preview.

I'm by no means the techie type, but a couple of ideas: It seems HubPages may use caching and a system whereby the page loads as the visitor scrolls--there'a name for it, but I've forgotten what it is--which works better than having everything load at once. On my phone, photos load instantly, but videos take a while, although that could be due to my slow connection speed. In spite of that, text was there in an instant, so reading continuity isn't broken--there's a white and then a black space between text until the video is loaded.

Everything usually seems to load quickly on my desktop, except for videos. They have always seemed to have taken a while.

Just checked using my desktop--it's a bit quicker, but videos still load up last, although that connection isn't the fastest in the world, either, I'm afraid.

Yeah, I I'll keep this in mind but I am not running out to change everything.  It wasn't that long ago we got the templates that urge us all to do the opposite.  Next month it might be something else.

That's my thinking too.   I expect HP will take a serious look at the layout at some point and redesign it to suit mobiles, and it may well not involve all full-width capsules.
