I am wondering if making colleges free is really that important to Americans? I mean our public schools suck for the most part. What good would it do for colleges? There are obviously some colleges and universities that are far better than others. What would happen to those colleges if everyone suddenly was able to go to them for free? And, for those colleges that do not have a stellar record, what is going to happen should their enrollment drop, when everyone vacates to go to Yale?
I think a better use of giving American's something free, would be to give us a break when it comes to heating our homes, or electricity. The home heating credit we currently get is peanuts to what our annual utility bills are. Why not make Utility companies, and gas companies provide heat and electricity to everyone, including businesses?
The sad part about all this, (If we have learned anything from congress vs Obama) All the promises sound good, but when it comes down to it, will it really happen? We need a president who will say to congress, hey fuck you. it's happening if you like it or not.
How would you get the utility companies to provide free heat and electricity?
Would our government just pay everyone's bills, or should they nationalize companies that provide electricity and heat?

America has really metamorphosed into a society of entitlements & freebies through social programs. This explains why America is in doubt. We do not need free colleges. That is beyond ridiculous. Things are far worth more if people pay for them. What happened to ethics of paying for the services we receive through WORKING . Sadly America has regressed from work ethic to lazy, entitlement ethic. Bernie & Hillary are leftists to the core. Democrats nowadays have become synonymous with leftists, socialists, & to a mild degree, communists.
Grace, you as a black female ought to know better, this sounds so much like the typical resentful Trump Republican.
With the skyrocketing costs of education, I don't want just Thurston Howell's or Donald Trump's kids being the only people having the wherewithal to acquire education. The idea of totally free education may be difficult to navigate, but reasonable access to education opportunities is essential for the masses to prevent those with privilege and wealth from being the only truly upwardly mobile entity in America.
I can't tell you what I think of Republicans, as it is neither polite nor suitable for mixed company.
Freebees are prevalent from the very top with Congress getting far better benefits and corporate welfare through subsidies all the way down to the baby factory welfare queens who make babies to make money (White as well as black). Everyone is sticking the Golden Goose for whatever they can get and the freebies are free flowing to who ever can promise a vote or a donation. It is crooked all the way from the top to the bottom. The question is who costs us the most?
Knowing this knowledge is painful. But don't let the blow-back make you feel bad just because you have knowledge of it, because you are not a part of that.
Free electric and heat would go to everyone regardless if they are working or not. Public schools are payed for by are tax dollars, their heat and electric is paid for with our tax dollars. There are thousands of public schools in this country, not to mention police, fire, highways.Traffic lights.
So what would be different about extending the free electric and gas they get to the people? The government is already giving electric companies and gas companies millions if not billions of dollars in subsidy, and some cities are buying power from electric companies in other cities to keep up with their demand. Where do you think they get that money?
Another subsidy is us corporations who don't pay taxes,or get a huge reduction. Did you know that GE pays -60% in taxes due to money they get from the government. Gas companies get 5 billion a year, to which they do nothing with the money other then give their CEO's pay raises. GM has also been receiving tax dollars for decades.
American public schools typically do a pretty good job. American State Universities also typically do a good job. Right now the government funds slightly more than 50% of the costs of these universities. If that proportion went up it would probably not effect the quality of the education, only the ability of poor people to attend.
...what is going to happen should their enrollment drop, when everyone vacates to go to Yale?
Yale is not suddenly going to drop its admissions standards, nor is any other university. In any case, Yale is private; these free college or subsidized tuition initiatives apply to public universities. In other countries where public university tuition is heavily or completely subsidized by the government, public institutions still admit only students who have good academic records, and private institutions still have their own admissions policies and fee structures.
(BTW, any one admitted to Yale only pays what they can pay, which may be $0 in the case of economically disadvantaged students, so that's not a very good example.)
Even with many against free college I support free or cheap college 100%. Why? Simple, college educated people are more likely to not end up on welfare, food stamps, housing assistance, etc.
Not saying it doesn't happen, but it certainly lowers the probability of being low income.
This helps lower the amount of money the government would put out in these assistance programs.
America should strive to have more college educated people. By making it free or super cheap this allows people who are brought up poor an easier chance to become something and break free of the poor cycle.
College takes much more than it did for previous generations even when you adjust for inflation. The number of hours a person would have to work to pay for their own education has doubled.
Do we really want to have our college educated paying off loans for the rest of their lives?
Even with grants it is still tough to pay for a decent education. Making sure we have more educated people in this country should never be looked at as a form of welfare. We must invest in the future!

Are you up for paying off student loans? President Biden on Wednesday announced a student loan handout plan that essentially would use taxpayer money to pay off up to $10,000 of student debt per borrower making less than $125,000 per year. That means Americans may be footing a nearly $300 billion...

There should be more stringent standards in high school for college and/or university admission. Too many students attending colleges and/or universities in the United States are clearly unqualified to attend such institutions. A noted educator was emphatic in his premise that only...
