Over the last week or ten days "articles" have been appearing in my feed. They are mostly from newbies with the usual newbie errors - poor grammar, copyright restricted images or none at all, too short, etc. Anybody else getting this?

I believe everybody gets them. It is upto you to help or ignore them. You, of course, help others Rupert smile

Yes Pen, but I've never had them before. These are not "please help me pass QAP" posts, they are articles that have appeared, somehow, to pass QAP, but are definitely, in my opinion, not up to standard. I have flagged them to higher authority and they seem to disappear. Puzzling.

The dictionary definition:  "marked by an air of assumed importance:  high falutin'"

I'm guessing Kenna is one of those people who thinks no one's writing should be criticised in case it hurts their delicate feelings and discourages their creativity.

She is missing the point. This is not a place for children to discover their abilities.  It's a place for adults to earn money.  And what Kenna probably doesn't understand is that the overall quality of the site directly affects how much we earn.  If people are allowed to post Hubs in poor English with grammatical and spelling mistakes, Google penalises the whole site and we all lose income.

HubPages is not a place to learn to write and never has been.  It's a place where good writers can learn how to apply their skills to writing for the internet.

I get the pejorative nature of the hoity-toity comment. What I don't get is why someone should be criticized for having high standards. A few people such as you Marisa do a lot of pro bono work trying to improve HP's product. In my view that's something that should be applauded not denigrated.

However, my initial question remains; how do substandard offerings get past the algorithmic gatekeeper and appear as approved articles?

I get what you're saying. I'm new to the site myself, but not to writing. I recently went from fiction writing to article writing. But I take 3 days to a week to write an article, research, and try to find decent pictures. How I decide if I want to join a site to write for or not is based on what hubs I see out there.

I am a true crime fan, so I write mostly true crime stuff. I do research, listen to podcasts, read non-fiction books about them and watch the documentaries. I also read true crime articles here. And what bothers me is wrong information and typos, especially apostrophes put in the wrong spot [ex. "You're house"]. I completely understand where you are coming from. I'd rather take a week working on edits and fixing than take an hr to write and post.
