Are there conitions in unconditional love?

This topic came up yesterday.  There was a small debate going:  one side says yes there are conditions in unconditional love the other says no there are no conditions in unconditional love.  Each side was having a little difficulty explaining to the other in a way for the other to understand their point.  It was pretty cool, hearing the antilitical debate:)

Well unconditional love means that you love them no matter what happens, but then again being faithful and hitting your partner. Those are conditions to keeping the love in a relationship. So in theory there is no such thing as unconditional love unless you define it differently.

All relationships should be built on the basis of respect and safety.  In this way, love comes within certain boundaries created for our own well being and that of our partners and children.  So loving someone unconditionally is really about acceptance of one another.  Unconditional love celebrates another individual for who that person is with humor, joy, forgiveness, and nurturing.  All of us, however, have conditions we set up around ourselves about how we will be treated.  Asking for respect, kindness, and honest communication is not so much conditional love as it is a human right.  If this is given one person to another, then unconditional love (as in the ability to make it through shifting times and the natural ebb and flow of a relationship) is very possible.

Someone's been listening to Rush again, haven't they? I suppose that if its "unconditional" love, then there can't be conditions.

What unconditional love really means, though, is that you love someone despite their actions. I work with girls in a treatment center and the hardest thing to teach is that will we still care for and accept who the girls are, we hate the behavior they show, and punish it appropriately. Most people can't separate the person from the behavior, though. And if the behavior is consistently against our beliefs, then maybe we love them enough to walk away.
