   what can cause a cat to throw up?
   
   my cat is really old and has been throwing up and she sleeps all day! I'm worried can anyone help?

   Dear Sarah,  I wouldn't worry about the sleeping because all cats need a lot of sleep, especially older one.  However, the throwing up is very worrisome.  There are many, many possible reasons why a cat throws up.  Sometimes they have hairballs or have eaten something toxic.  I didn't realize avocado plants are toxic and my cat threw up repeatedly after eating some of the leaves of that plant.  However, more serious reasons can include liver ailments.  I know vets are expensive but it would be a good idea to take your friend to the doctor.  Good luck!

   My cat is sixteen but she had been doing that also for many years, it seemed more so eating her dry food which is what she mostly gets ( almost immediately after eating, right?) and my daughter told me she had read somewhere that it has something to do with their esophagus and that putting her food bowl up higher would fix this and it did! I also started not long after that to give her Hartz hairball remedy. I will forget at times so we get an accident now and then and also with her being an inside/outside cat if she comes in really hungry and eats too fast so I have been making sure not to put a lot in her bowl for mornings when she has an empty stomach. Just maybe three tablespoons of whatever she eats and then fill her bowl a little later. It is very much improved believe me. Hope it works for you too. Let me know.

   It's probably due to its diet.  Maybe the "pretty princess little snowball fancy feast" is too much for it, and it needs to get back to basics, such as rats, mice, and birds.

   Cats all sleep a lot, this helps them recover from their sudden burst of speed capabilities.Older cats sleep even longer. As far as throwing up, this is also fairly common in cats. Cats get hairballs built up from licking their coats. We have one cat that loves milk. He can drink evaporated milk all day long, and no problem, but every time he drinks regular milk he throws up! Some brands of dry cat food that are hair ball formula actually seem to induce vomiting more that the regular cat food. As long as your cat is not losing weight, I wouldn't be too concerned.With that said, for your own peace of mind I would take the cat to the vet.

   Cats have very sensitive digestive systems.  It doesn't take much to upset their stomachs, unfortunately.  Common causes are:  hair balls, food changes, eating plants, eating human food (especially dairy products if your cat's not used to them), and eating too quickly.  There are, however, illnesses and diseases that cause cats to vomit:  chronic renal failure, feline infectious peritonitis, etc..  If you find your cat is vomiting frequently and losing weight, a check up with your veterinarian is in order.

   Switch to a better diet food especially for digestion. Science diet found at vet offices works wonders. Make sure she gets greens. You can buy grass at pet stores or walmart. Brush her with a brush. When cats get older the things on their tung wear out (forgot the word for them). This will help prevent her from ingesting extra fur. Go to the vet. The vet will ease your worries or determine if something is really wrong.
