According to my grandfather, a ships master from the fishing port, Kingston upon Hull, it is a form of knitting just using a single hook to form knots to make a net work, the best crocheters are fishermen, where the art started to make and repair their fishing nets. There are other theories that it started in the early 19th century as a knitting form; however, art tends to grow out of prcticality so I prefer the fishermen story.
Crocheting is a craft of using a pattern, yarn and a crochet hook.
Crochet is a centuries old craft that takes its name from the French word croq, which means hook. Crochet, a fun and relaxing hobby, is easy to learn. Using this popular needlecraft, you can create beautiful fashion and home décor projects such as tops, hats, ponchos, scarves, doilies, tablecloths and bedspreads as well as a myriad of adorable items just for babies.
Only two basic supplies, a hook and a ball of thread or yarn, are needed to crochet. All crochet stitches are a series of loops and wraps of thread around the hook. Every pattern starts with a slip knot followed by a series of loops called chains. These chain stitches form a foundation row. The first row of a pattern is built on this chain foundation. Each successive row is crocheted on top of the previous row. Each row in a pattern may call for different stitches, but all stitches are variations of the basic single crochet which is very easy to master.

Which is the easier craft? Knitting or crochet?I have recently learned to do both, but find crochet to be more forgiving and quicker. Because I haven't yet learned to read patterns correctly, I have done several projects "freestyle," so continue to favor crochet. What are your thoughts?
