Is writing essential in maintaining balance & good mental health?
I think it is. Through writing we're able to vent emotions we might have stored up and not even realize we were keeping inside. For example, writing a poem to get out anger. I think writing also allows us to grow, with our imagination and ideas and we are able to learn so much. So, if reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body, then I'd say the same about writing. Any form of expression is good for your sanity and mental growth.
Absolutely,
Writing can tap into the very being of one's soul;
In order to make it evident for all the world to visibly see;
Writing can vent any emotion in a positive perspective;
It's the in tuned harmony to it's hidden beasts menagerie;
Like plucking the proper word fresh out of the Autumn air !
For me; YES! My skull would explode if I didn't vent off some of the images and ideas that whirl around in there like a vegetable smoothie. But, I know many people for whom writing is a chore and drudgery. Their passion lies elsewhere.
I know many people who don't write or journal, yet I have found it to be very helpful! Just in tracking my own progression in life, and helping me to figure things out...for the betterment of my situations:) I do believe that writing gives my life balance! Here on hubpages, it is great to see the progression of writers here:) It does appear that, just like a reader who reads allot, improves their reading and comprehension skills. A writer who writes allot...improves their writing skills:) Great topic question Ken!
I have done journal writing for years because it is the one way I can most quickly connect to my heart and sort out what I'm feeling. It also helps me sort out difficult ideas/thoughts to make sense of them.
Journal writing, I've since discovered, is one of the ways to prevent Alzheimer's...I guess it uses parts of our brain we don't use in our everyday life, thus creating new neurotransmitters. I will keep writing now that I know it's so good for me!
I have suffered from chronic depression and PTSD since I was 12 years old. I found early on that I was able to express my feelings and vent my frustrations in my writings; often when I couldnt express myself to a friend or family member.
Writing is a big part of my life. What I write might not make since to some but it eases my mind and also helps me sort through my thoughts and problems.
If writing is your thing, then yes it is absolutely essential in the effort to maintain balance and good mental health.
Writing has a way of getting all of that jumbled stuff in your brain out on paper where you can either organize it or discard it.
Writing is so much part of who I am that, at this point, I don’t even question myself anymore if I should do it or not. It is a way to clear my own ideas, to share and to heal. It is the best and less expensive therapy and it has been so for many, many years.
I have never felt more insane than when I started writing everyday. That's my experience. I recommend you stop writing and start skipping rope, or making ice-sculptures...do something real. Writing will only make you crazy. Take it from me.
I think it definitely is. It has helped me in many ways. It has saved me hundreds of dollars in therapy!

I decided to add this topic because I am passionate about dream interpretation but have noticed hubpages is rather divided about the subject. Perhaps I will eventually write a hub on it but was curious to know what others thought.I write a lot of material on dreams under mental health->...

I've decided that one of my next blogs is going to feature treating depression and other mental health issues naturally without the use of psychiatric drugs. I have some experience in the past (good and bad) and some good ideas on what I want to include in this blog, but I wanted to get some...

An interesting article I read this morning is; Progressively Mental State of the Union: New studies correlate poor mental health with leftist politics. It is from the American Conservative (Apr 14, 2023) The opening paragraph states;"Last month, James Freeman, assistant editor of the Wall...
