Compulsive liars... What makes them feel the need to lie all the time?

I know a few of them, I expect we all do.. One of them will even lie to people in front of someone who knows the real story.. What drives them to spout so much crap?

I find that some/most compulsive liars lie to gain attention or to make themselves feel or look better than they really are. An example would be for someone to say they go basejumping to make themselves look cool or extreme when in reality, they never have done it.

It depends on the person and the crowd they are affiliating with. Other compulsive liars just lie because it's like an addiction, like hoarding and the such. It's hard to break once you start relying on lies or they become so embedded in you.

I have experince with a handful of them.  By compulsive, I assume you mean the ones that are so out of control that they lie even when they don't need to.  I think they like the adrenaline rush from getting away with a good lie.

Compulsive lying is an illness like any other disease.  Many times those who are lying do not really accept that they are lying - they are not even aware.  It has become the norm for them.  It is in their system so they just continue one lie after another. They can't seem to stop.  They embellish everything they say in order to look or feel good. They need lots of counselling i.e. if they are willing to accept counselling.

    1. A lack of security in themselves and their real story.
2 A sociopath who gets of on such behaviour, they view life and people as pawns.
    3. A liar who feels that the only way to get ahead from a very young age is through lies.
