    That really depends on the friendship, sometimes you've been friends so long it would just be hard to see you like that for the other person. But the best way is to just ask, be upfront about it.

    Once you land in friend-zone hell you will never escape it.  Stay out of it by remaining desireless.  "The Tao of Steve" works.  Otherwise, best case scenario would be to become "friends with benefits."

    I tend to think its a maturity thing.  When I was younger (early twenties) nice guys just didn't make the list for possible boyfriends, I was into bad boys.  Once I matured a little and realized the bad boys were the worst possible kind of boyfriend, any potential male friend I had that was good to me suddenly jumped on my bf scope.

    Other then that, I would suggest being less available.
