Is there really a such thing as equality?

Is equality just a concept, or is it really possible?

Interesting question. I believe you can make people whole (or equal in this case) when it comes to finances or tangible objects. However, I believe equality also has to do a lot with perception. Some of this has to do with one's self-esteem.  Thought provoking question!  Kevin

It depends on your position in life. In reality, yes of course there is, it is just your perspective. Equality, to the poor means that the rich should have a little less and they should have a little more. To the middle income, equality is at least the chance to try and better themselves. To the rich, equality is already in place. They believe everybody is equal, it is just not their fault that they are better than any one else. Regardless of whether or not they were born with a silver spoon in their mouth, they believe they are where they are because an opportunity arose and they took it. They cannot get the concept that not everybody is given an opportunity and so they believe any one with less than them is either inept or lazy.

I think equality is one of those things we want, but will never have.

Whether we like it or not, we have prejudices. We might not even recognize them for what they are. It's not that we don't like certain people or races or groups or anything, we just aren't fair to them because of something we've heard, faced or seen.

I like all people, but when I was a waitress I judged people depending what I'd heard about them. No matter how much I should have been fair, if I found out they were bad tippers or extremely picky, I didn't treat them like other customers. I tried to rush them out so I could fill the table with people who would do right by me.

Yep, it's just very elusive, I would even say unattainable

I think that in order for us to have real equality, a lot of people would have to change their thinking.  There is still a generation who believes men are the superior being and that white is best.

Stupid, archaic and dangerous thinking but when you talk to people in their older years, you can see that come through.  Will it happen, maybe one day if we keep working at it.

Unfortunately....I think the only time equality exists is when someone is a baby and has no concept of the term and when someone is dead. Wouldn't it be nice if equality could exist? We would have to live is some type of utopia though and I would imagine that hasn't happened since the Garden of Eden...lol.

On the social aspect, I think equality is not present because discrimination of all things pervades.

It needs a miracle for something like this to happen. It would be great to see it

Equality must be defined before any useful discussion can occur. Is it equality in the eyes of the law, which is to say in civil rights? Equality in outcomes, i.e. in income or wealth? Equality in social relations, with all prejudice and discrimination outlawed in all things? It's impossible so much as to talk about equality until what is meant by the concept is clearly established for the purposes of that particular discussion.

no way is there such a word in the world, the word may stand for one thing but it has never in history been used the way it ought to.

    Which sort, and for whom?

Equal protection under the law exists in some places, more or less.

    Equal opportunity--?

    Equal achievement--?

And given that we are all individually different, what circumstances in my life could possibly make me 'equal' to you?  For example, if wealth is important to one of us but not the other, then what do our 'equal' incomes mean?
