What would be the future of Europe if Napoleon Bonaparte had won at the Battle of Waterloo?
Parlez-vous Francais, because we probably would need to. Also, if the native Americans had not helped push France back in North America, They may have well gained a very strong foothold and prevented settlement by other European pioneers.
Napoleon was a master of rebuilding and training his armies. A victory at Waterloo would have broken the Prussians, and given Napoleon breathing room. Maybe the failure of his Russian campaign or the Peninsular War would have tempered his aggression, but either way France was surrounded. Victory at Waterloo would have given Napoleon time to rebuild, and maybe he would have been able to mount a comeback at some time, but at that stage in history France was ready to fall. Europe would have seen more years of Napoleonic rule in France, but France was no longer in a position to dominate all of Europe.
Don't know, we may not have seen the two world wars in the 20c, or someone rise to power like Hitler. It's your idea, set to and write an alternative history S/F story about it, could be a winner, I've not seen it done before.
If we assume that he won at Waterloo with a crushing victory and was able to control most of Europe before the allied parties against him had the time to rebuild an army, we could safely assume that he would control most of Western Europe, especially if he was able to build a peaceful empire. We'd be talking about the Pax Francium along with the Pax Romanum and Pax Britanicum. Nation states in Europe would be far different. German, which didn't unify for another sixty years, would most likely never have unified. This would throw out both world wars. Without the struggle of the first world war in Russia, Leninist Marxism wouldn't have come about. Marxism might not even have come about, as the struggle in the German and French states were the inspiration behind his and Engle's Manifesto. France would be a super power, weakening the ability of Britain to become as large as it was. The United States wouldn't have been affected too much, except that they wouldn't prosper from loaning money to the Allies for the World Wars. If America was on good terms with the French, we could assume that we would have gone to the moon much later, if at all. If America moved to bad terms with the French, the Cold War could have been against the French. We wouldn't have countries banding together to denounce war because the United Nations wouldn't have been created. We could assume that France conquered much of Europe and Asia, perhaps having control of all of Asia south of Russia.

Some people like to comfort themselves with the idea that if they get rid rid of horrible-old Christianity from the world, we will be left with nice, peaceful nihilism. I would like to point out that if you trample away Christianity, we won't be left with the unity of blissful non-belief, we will...

I am a community college history teacher, and I have found that it can be tricky to discuss recent historical events. It is difficult, after all, to know which recent events and trends will ultimately matter. So what do you think that future history books will discuss when covering 1990-2010?
