If it is a recurring thing, I would see my doctor to determine what the problem is. If I'm just stressed from work or something, a dose of Benedryl (the OTC antihistamine) works like a charm.
Fight no. Deal with, befriend and tame, yes. It depends on the cause.

I've found that continuing to rest quietly in bed with eyes closed is helpful after I've dozed off and awakened way too early. Especially on weekends, there's no law that says one must get up when you're awake and the sun is up.
I talk to my Dr. he helps me so much with my sleep disorder.
A hot bath or shower before bed and a little reading helps me relax. When I can't get to sleep, I take 2 tylenol. If I am really stressed over an issue, I write my thoughts in a notebook where I can say anything I want, then I tear up the evidence! A continuous problem should be addressed by a doctor.
I would probably get a sleep study done to find out what the problem is.
After a stressful day, reading a book for few minutes, usually helps me. Some nights if there is a problem to get sleep due to some tension, I just close my eyes and relax completely for a while, and relax part by part of my body like savasana. It helps a lot to fall sleep. I have others telling me that drinking a cup of hot milk just before sleep helps them.
If these tips fail to work and have a recurrent problem I'd definitely see a doctor.
I stay up for days at a time, so obviously I haven't figured out a consistently effective way to deal with insomnia, haha. My mind never shuts off, so when I absolutely need to sleep, I redirect my thoughts to a calmer task - remembering. I close my eyes and imagine walking through every place I've visited in my life before. Every place I can remember, from my childhood and from more recent times. My school, my grandmother's old house, a beach I visited on vacation... and eventually, day dreaming turns into actual dreaming, and sleep. Hope this is helpful
I have sleeping problems too and I take melatonin and hot bath.
I have insomnia many years and now trying out drinking chinese tea (Pu Er) in the day and stop before 9 pm. It seems to help reducing my brain activities in the night and giving me better sleep.
Sometimes I take afternoon nap for an hour or so when I am tired. I am also doing meditation to calm my body.
Guess every little bit of things I have done helps to reduce my insomnia.
Melatonin changed my life. Check this out:

I have not gotton Insomnia more than twice. You need to take it easy, just go to sleep.
I take Valerian Root and I'm going to try Melatonin, which I read about here in Hubpages on a hub by Wesman Todd Shaw - How I Learned To Get The Rest and Sleep That I Need Using Melatonin and Valerian Root - which was very interesting.
Also, I think my problem is I think too much and that's why I don't sleep, every worry, every little detail... it's a nightmare. So, if people can shut done all this thinking, it's easier to sleep, but I just can't do it...
Tell yourself you are going to do a job you really don't want to do if you aren't asleep in half an hour, you have to mean it and do it otherwise it won't work but if you do this one of two things will happen, you will get the job done or you will get the best nights sleep you ever had.
I do this with my ironing i tell myself if i'm not asleep within half an hour i'll get up and do the ironing. Always works. and on the few occasions it doesn't well my ironing gets done anyway.
Good luck
As we get older, sleep becomes more elusive. We do not fall asleep as fast. We do not sleep as long. And we do not go as deep into sleep. And we wake up more easily.
Don't take sleep for granted. Sleep is the third most important component to... read more

Can anyone recommend any homeopathic tablets to help with sleep?I have trouble sleeping at night. I dont have any trouble falling asleep, but find that I wake up an hour or so later and can't get back to sleep. I don't want to take sleeping tablets, but wonder if there is any natural alternatives.

How are people coping with depression without taking any pills? Pills for depression is not a great idea as they invariably come with side effects.
