How Can You Stick to a Diet?

It’s funny I should be asked this question because three years ago I began a weight loss journey that took me 2 ½ years to accomplish. That had been the longest it’d taken me to lose weight, but my goal was to lose 160 lbs. I have struggled with my weight most of my life, going on my first diet when I was only ten years old. From the ages of 10 to 42 I yo-yo dieted more times than I can remember, putting my body and mind through torture.

In the past I didn’t have specific goals beyond losing excess weight. I didn’t eat healthily. I simply cut back on certain foods and severely reduced my caloric intake. In short, I wasn’t in the right frame of mind, nor did I plan for long-term weight loss maintenance. In my experience, the single, most important thing I did to lose the weight was want it for the right reasons. This may sound simplistic, but until I focused on implementing a holistic approach did I finally succeed. Not only have I lost the excess weight, but I’ve also kept it off for the longest time I ever have. I started slowly, eliminating certain foods one at a time, and allowing my body and mind to adjust to the changes. It was the patience I had that made all the difference.

Any diet will work in getting off excess weight. But not until I found what I needed to do for me and my body and understand that it was going to take time was I able to stick to a healthier regime, even after reaching my weight loss goal. Diet, along with a healthier attitude, better nutrition, and exercise, will help anyone stay on a weight loss journey. I just had to find what worked specifically for me.

Did you see the Geico commercial during the Super Bowl?  Where the guy couldn't afford a diet program so he had three middle school girls following him around, and every time he wanted to eat something, they'd say "Ewe", "Seriously?", and something else, so he couldn't eat.  Just imagine that, that would work for a good long time- lol!!

Or, have you ever dumped bacon fat out?  Just imagine the fats in the foods in that big glob of disgusting fat when it hits your stomach - I'd rather dump it - even sugary snacks have crisco and all sorts of gross chemicals.... cookies may look nice in the packaging, but just think what you are really putting IN your body.

Read labels.  If you can't pronounce the ingredients, don't buy it...

I used to have big problems with stomach fat, but am getting in better shape now.  Here's a good site I found that really helped. It gave me great workouts and diet tips and showed me what I was doing wrong before...there's even lots of free articles on the site..

I believe the two most important things, when it comes to weight loss adherence, are that you are truly ready for the change and that you make smart and small changes that are permanent... in other words, the best way to stick to a diet, is to stop "dieting". Make healthy living your new normal. It's about lifestyle change, not about something you do for a little while for a specific result. As far as being prepared- when you're truly ready, it almost happens on its own because you will be propelled to action. If you aren't there yet, read up and learn as much as you can about weight loss.

I just published a hub titled "Preparing Yourself for Successful Weightloss," I strongly recommend it to anyone looking for the answer to this question.

That's the hardest part of weight loss. when it comes to my clients i make them accountable doing two things:

    - log in their food
    - wear the exerspy (a calorie tracking armband)

once they know how many calories they eat and they compare it to how many calories they burn they are aware of their daily weight loss, weekly weight loss, and they know how much weight they should expect to burn in  a month.

it all comes down to "crunching the numbers"
