   Any action is dependent only on the state of mind of the one who is doing the action. The same can be asked of a student who burned the sacred statue of a Buddha atop a mountain to save himself from freezing...
   The same question can be asked, why do people lie or cheat...

   the gold rush sets a classic example of how people would risk their lives and else to get money, or worldly possessions that is in association with money. some people steal because they are unable to provide for themselves or their families. some others steal because they want to keep up with the joneses but are unable to afford to do so without going hungry or getting evicted.
   
   however, there are also the selected group of affluent people who steal simply for the "thrill" of the action. Where your heart starts racing and adrenaline pumps through your veins during the act and the smug satisfaction they feel when they get away with the act. For people like these, its akin to taking drugs or other substance abuse, it is simply to fill the void of emotion or time in their lives.

   People steal for a variety of reasons.  There are people who want the thrill of knowing that they CAN steal.  there are the people who feel the need to steal for COMPULSION'S sake.  Then there are the people who steal because of NECESSITY because they do not have something they need, such as food for their family.  Lastly, they steal because they WANT something so badly but don't want to pay for it (or don't have the money to pay for it).

   They steal because of greed and because they think that they can always get away with it.  Some people steal because it's the easy way out, and they don't have to work for what they need or want.  Some do it for the thrill of just doing it and then they become addicted to it.  Yes I believe that stealing can become addictive, and once they start doing it and get away with they will continue to steal until they get caught and face jail time. Some may never break out of that vicious circle and continue to steal for the rest of their lives!!!

   There are so many reasons, but none of them justify the action and only the offender really knows the "why" connected to the act. Yet almost everyone pays once the act is committed.

   Many steal to support addictions. This reason is a weapon used in sociological class warfare i.e. supply the drug and limit the means to puschase(lack of work) causing anxiety and affecting not only the user but those in their community. Stealing is also an addiction like uncontrollable sexual indulgences or alchoholism. The Bible says, "Those who stole steal no more but when I return you might as well keep stealing because it is now too late(This is two scriptures combined).

    I dont think there is one answer to this question.  Some people steal out of neccessity, others steal for greed.  Maybe it is our ego?  Our egos make us feel that our needs are more important to others, and some people cannot control their ego.  It gets the better of them and they end up disregarding that "good little voice" and choose themselves over the person they stealing from.

    From my experience most people who steal are people who have grown up thinking that breaking the law for their own benefit is justified. They get the idea in their head that they won't be caught and when they do they are screwed. It's not necessarily  because they can't afford to but in many cases I know of they steal because they have used the rest of their money on things like drugs, cigarettes and other things. Of course there are people out there who steal because they actually have no money but mostly people steal just because they think they can get away with it.
