   One way is using goodreads.com. You create a profile and choose books you've read and rate them. You also create a list of books you want to read. Then the site gives you suggestions based on these. I've found a couple books this way but I only just started using it a couple of months ago. Otherwise just hearing about authors or books from friends is probably the best. You could always ask bookstore employees or librarians too.

   Bookstore employees are sometimes a great source in finding new authors, however customer service is not what it used to be. Now I rely more on family suggestions and the internet. The "Customers who bought this also bought:" section has been my best friend for a long time now and I have discovered a lot of great writers that way.

   Soemtimes I use http://www.whatshouldireadnext.com/ which is a website where you can enter the name of a book you enjoyed reading and it will recommend similar genre books based on others' reviews.
   
   Also Amazon is handy as you can locate a book you have recently enjoyed and scroll down to part that says 'Customers Who Bought This Item Also Bought' and it's usually a goldmine for new books or new authors which you will also enjoy.

   My favorite sources of book reviews are:
   - The New York Times Book Review (http://www.nybooks.com/)
   - The Times Literary Supplement (http://www.the-tls.co.uk/tls/).
   - The Economist's book section
   I also find Amazon's suggestions, based on my previous purchases and wish list, are pretty pertinent.
   Of course there's nothing like old-fashioned browsing in bookstores. Too bad there are fewer and fewer of them.

   Getting recommendations from friends is one way, but most of the books I buy these days are based on suggesions from Amazon.  I have been disappointed a couple of times, but they're usually pretty good at matching new titles to my preferences.

   Sometimes I'll go to my boss or coworkers. Entering their offices is like entering a library full of books related to my field or something similar. They always give great recommendations as well.
