What is the one thing that inspires you to create art?

Everyone has their own reasons for creating.  I wonder if there is a common thread that we artists all share.  What causes us to desire to create?

Inspired by the desire to express our emotions to the world in the most everlasting way.

I agree.  There is something about the notion of achieving a sort of immortality through one's art.

artistic creation, for me, is a tide. Inspiring images flow in from the world - both nature and humanity - and deep insight flows out from my soul. They meet, and art comes forth like waves crashing on a shore.

Interesting, SidKemp.  It sounds like your artistic expression is a response to the world.  Do you ever find yourself in a "dry" period?  If so, how do you rediscover the passion you obviously bring to your work?

Interesting question, but I could never pick One Thing.   Many things, people, places, music, images, and concepts inspire me.   I would think this might be true for many people.

Yes, I agree that many things can inspire us.  I'm wondering what makes us as artists respond to that inspiration in artistic expression.  Is it a personality type, an attitude?  I'm wondering what that inner voice is that drives us to create.

I agree. There are many things that might trigger the desire to create a painting. Sometimes it is the opportunity to explore a different medium.

I choose two things to inspire my creative and performing arts. Music, and events that happen to me in my everyday life.

It's interesting that for you music is tied to your (I assume) visual art.  I also like to "celebrate the everyday" in my art.  I like to find the beauty in things that people often overlook.  What kind of art do you do?

How great!  So your art is kinetic as opposed to my "on paper" art.  It's surprising that even though our art forms are so different, our inspiration is much the same.

They say, the greatest obstacle in science is illusion of knowledge, you need your imagination to fill in the missing gaps. When I encounter a problem that needs to be solved or a question that needs to be answered I let my imagination to 'roam free'...the need to view life from a higher perspective is the one thing that inspires me to create art...

I love your answer!  I think you've hit on a part of where all our inspiration comes from - the desire to view life from a higher plane - to see its beauty, to feel and express its pain.  Thank you for your input.

My art teacher from high school.  He taught me to just keep working.  Inspiration isn't something that falls from the sky, you have to work for it to show up.

Well said!  There is a lot to be said for just getting down to work.  It's amazing what interesting directions we can take when "in the process." Pearl S. Buck had a famous quote about that.  Thanks for your answer, chipped teacup.
