   For me it's Christian Bale. His performances are always phenomenal and he really commits to the characters. American psycho is a true testament to his skill.

   Dustin Hoffman
   His work does not form a shell around him and present a covering picture, like many others, it seems to come from within, from an inner perception and energy.
   I remember thinking, when watching 'Rainman', - if he goes on like this he won't live very long!

      Yes, I agree. but he has a distinct advantage in possessing a very striking face.....but I feel it's always the same face!  Perhaps it's TOO striking for me.  Also high drama is always easier to portray that natural everyday 'humankind'.

      Oh..I agree with you, Paula. .high drama is easier to portray... and also I love that description..striking.. In fairness, there are many that I like..Daniel Day Lewis ranks high up there..and Joaquin Phoenix and oh.. I better stop..

    Micheal Fassbender.
    Easy.
    Every review of a film he's been in since 2010 has commented on his fantastic talent, even if the film was less than spectacular. He quite simply, pulls it off. He's going to go down in history.

    Denzel Washington, in my humble opinion.  I've never seen him make a bad movie and he just has a way of sucking you into whichever character he is portraying.  A couple of his best were "Deja Vu" and "Man on Fire"...

    Yes this is a tough decision. I would have to say Leonardo Dicaprio who ironically hates acting but puts in a stella performance every time and has played several characters which have pushed his acting skills beyond the envelope.

    I love Russell Crowe, but he's in Australia. I'm really becoming fond of Leonardo  DiCaprio. He has turned out some really good movies since Titanic:
    
    Blood Diamond
    The Aviator
    Inception
    Shutter Island
    
    He also did J. Edgar Hoover and The Great Gatsby is in production. He just keeps getting better. I was worried there for awhile when I saw Romeo and Juliet, but he's come a long way!
