What to do with a child who has outgrown the crib but not ready for regular bed?
My daughter is 17 mths and has figured out how to climb out of her crib. We are worried she will hurt herself. However she is not mentally ready for a toddler bed. How do we ensure her safety?
We put my daughter's mattress on the floor then bought her a toddler bed.
It takes patience to keep them in their bed but in the end it will be worth not having to worry about her injuring herself trying to escape the crib, I would also invest in a gate that would be difficult to climb or open as well. Good Luck!
I would suggest a toddler bed with the little safety perimeters that go all around the entire bed. It ensures that they don't fall out. Just to be a step safety you can also watch them from the monitor, when you are at ease then you can take it from there. You can buy the perimeters from any store that says cribs, etc and they are not that expensive. Also to extra cautious you can place pillows under the perimeters, just in case. hope this helps.
Brittvan22 is right, that's what we did with my grandson, they will get out of bed at times but it's better than having them fall out of a crib. He would climb out of bed and sleep on the floor with his toys.
Smarter/sneaky little ones they are. Somehow my daughter would wonder to my bed at three am, tugging me, "Mommy, I want to sleep with you." Took three nights to keep her in her own bed.
Omce my son was able to climb out of his crib, I moved him to a toddler bed. There are toddler beds you can purchase that can convert into twin beds when your daughter is ready.
Take him to bed with you. When they're ready they'll move out on their own. My first wife was Thai and in her culture it's normal that the youngest child sleep with their parents. Isolating them in a closed room is, to them, cruel. I've done it with mine and have no complaints.
You have a little climber, too, huh? Our son was about that age when we discovered his ability to climb INTO his crib!! Fearing he may fall at some point, climbing in or out, we moved him to a toddler bed which was lower to the ground. Falls might be inevitable, so we figured it would be best if he fell the shortest distance! We also tucked his covers in on the open side, hoping if he rolled over it would be towards the wall.
I am not sure if you have a crib that turns into a transisitonal bed like the one my grandboy does. When he was big enough to not sleep with the railing up it was able to be converted into a bed with the side down. His Momma made a body pillow large enough to extend across the bed so he does not roll out at night.
There is also no frame futons which can be purchased. When we lived in Japan we all slept on those. They were of very firm foam and very comfortable.
I have heard that they have crib tents that you can put around the crib to keep them from climbing out and hurting themselves. We chose to put our daughter into a toddler bed and put one of the sides by the wall. We weren't sure how it would go. But, she did great. Best of luck ~ fitmom

I have an 18 month old, who is no where near ready for a toddler bed. He'd be up all night playing.. I'd find him in the morning, passed out haphazardly on the floor, stuffed kitten in one hand, lego block in the other. When do kids usually make the great switch to beds?

When do you transition a toddler from a crib to a toddler bed?I'm a bit paranoid that our daughter will roll out or just get out of her bed and run around her room, which would result in her not sleeping in her bed, which will result in her getting up throughout the night because she's not getting...
