   Becoming Human
   Nothing is more fascinating to us than, well, us. Where did we come from? What makes us human?

   Zeitgeist: The Federal Reserve.  It opened my eyes to the truth about the current system we live in.  How our money is based on credit and debt. 
   
   It also led me to many other great documentaries and made me look at things differently.
   
   I don't know if watching it was a curse or a gift.  It is great feeling knowledgeable of the truth, but it also brings many hardships and worries.
   
   After watching it, I understood the symbolism of the movie The Matrix, and how it applies to our world.  I'm sure a lot of people might disagree with me on what I am talking about, maybe calling me a conspiracy theorist or some other term. But the truth is in front of your eyes if you look for it.

   It is very rich in culture.  It mainly focuses on food from different parts of China.  But it's presented in a very interesting way.

   Taking Chance - a made for HBO documentary/movie based on the true experiences of Lt. Colonel Michael Strobl. Taking Chance is an emotional look at the military rituals taken to honor its war dead, as represented by a fallen Marine killed in Iraq, Lance Corporal Chance Phelps. Lt Colonel Strobl learns of Chances death and volunteers to escort his body to it's final resting place in Wyoming. Along the way, he encounters hundreds of people affected by Chances death, a vast majority of whom never knew him.

   While not exactly a documentary, it was completely based off a true story. Rabbit Proof Fence. I watch documentaries, too, but I just can't think of a favorite off the top of my head.
   
   Rabbit Proof Fence is about racism in Australia, unfortunately not too long ago. I have not seen it in a while, so apologies if my details are a little rough.
   
   The white people were trying to "take in" those born of both a white parent and a black parent, thus making them of mixed race, and they try to make them white again through behavior and breeding. REALLY nasty concept.
   
   But the whole story is about three girls, two sisters and a cousin, ranging from about five years old to maybe twelve or thirteen who have to walk across the desert by following the fence that was recently built to keep the rabbits out. At the end, they show footage of the women who really escaped and it says they were later captured again and had to escape a second time.

   Being a big basketball fan, I would say either the Fab Five documentary or the Dream Team documentary.
   
   The Fab Five is about the '92 and '93 men's basketball teams of the University of Michigan.  The story is interesting because the '92 team fielded 5 freshman starters including phenom Chris Webber (who would become a number one overall pick in the NBA Draft).  These five inner-city recruits revolutionized the sport of basketball through their new hip hop attitude and are known for popularizing the change to longer basketball shorts.  The team's two Final Four appearances were revoked after it was found out an illegal booster helped recruit some of the players to Michigan.
   
   The Dream Team follows the '92 USA Men's Olympic basketball team in the Barcelona Olympics.  This was the first year professionals were allowed to compete in Olympic basketball so the '92 team featured Hall of Fame legends such as Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, and Charles Barkley. The documentary details the relationships and interactions between the teammates and the fans of Barcelona along their historic Gold Medal campaign.

    The Cinema Verite classic 'Grey Gardens by the Maysle Brothers was pretty much a life changing movie for me. It's an unscripted film about two eccentric spinsters - a mother and daughter (Jacqueline Bouvier's aunt and cousin) who live together in a faded mansion in the Hamptons (Long Island).
    
    The handheld camera and little if any intervention by the filmmakers show the weird beauty of relationships in life's mundane moments. I saw it in film class while studying Urban Planning - and as I was already realizing the potential of film and video as tools to capture the requirements and needs of the people I was designing for - decided just to throw it all in and switch completely to documentary film as a story telling device, a community activism tool and as an art form.
