Is Ecuador proceding correctly by granting asylum to Julian Assange?
Ecuador has granted Julian Assange diplomatic asylum. This decision has caused the UK to retaliate and I'm sure Sweden is also trying to find a way to get to Julian Assange.
Ecuador have publicly stated that they will defend Julian Assange because he is a great threat to countries such as the USA. Could this lead to a political war?
What do you think will happen to Julian Assange?
Well I don' think it is for the right reasons but I do think it's good they are granting him asylum, he is pretty obviously being framed for something he didn't do because of wikileaks. Also I think we should do everything to encourage people to make this information public, the people have a right to know.
Assange is probably certifiable, but he performs a public service by exposing the cynical, hypocritical machinations of nation-states. Maybe it takes a crazy man to do that, given the power arrayed against it.
Ecuador is itself a sovereign state. It has every right to provide political asylum to anyone it chooses, including Julian Assange. Britain is also a sovereign state, and it is not required to let him out of its jurisdiction, into which he must enter should he leave the Ecuadoran embassy grounds in London.
It looks like it's going to be a long night. I hope they have plenty to eat and drink at the embassy.
I'm just glad you're one of the few people bringing this into the open for discussion. Assange may be an enemy to the US government (and other governments), but he's a friend to the American people and to people of other nations around the world. The US government wants Assange because we threw away Habeas Corpus a few years ago under President Bush, which means the Justice Department will hold Assange for an indefinite period of time without any sort of charge or trial--tortured probably in the meantime. Sweden and the UK are nothing more than the auxiliaries of the US military legions and are afraid to not comply. Assange has done nothing illegal. The leaked Afghanistan footage humiliated the US military, who are not good at anything anymore other than propagandizing themselves. They can't seem to win a war. The leaked diplomatic cables exposed to the world that the US "foreign aid" packages we have been giving to foreign governments were essentially bribes to local dictators and money to purchase our weapons to use on their own people so that we could get resources, oil, and cheap labor from their nations. Nearly all of South America has fallen out of the US imperial sphere of influence and the US is too broke to go to war there again. After what we have done to Latin America over the past 100 years, Ecuador has every reason to hate us. North Africa and much of the Middle East is beginning to leave the US sphere as well, thanks to WikiLeaks.

Was the Ecuadorean granting of asylum to Julian Assange an abuse of process?Arguably Assange was simply abusing his political background in order to avoid facing rape charges; or are his concerns about extradition to the USA from Sweden real? Apparently it is easier for the US to extradite Assange...

I thought it would be a neat idea to award Julian Assange the Nobel Peace Prize for 2011 - if he's still alive of course - but it seems I was not the only one to have the same thought - the Russian government has suggested it already - 2 Peace Prize Winners imprisoned - 1 in the USA (he ain't there...
