   Question to Americans; would you recommend America as a good place to live to a European?
   
   I've lived in the UK for most of my life and seen much of Western Europe, which due to the European Union with its harmonised laws, business, and lifestyles, is pretty much the same all over. My wife and I have considered relocating to America with our kids for a couple years to see something different, but our only experience of America has been two summers in Arizona with weekend trips to Vegas.
   
   So would you recommend America as a good place to bring up a middle class family and if so where?

   Yes, I would! Make New York City your port of entry, spend some time there. But seriously consider settling down in the New England (Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island) area.
   
   This area boasts of great tourist and outdoors attractions. History has it that it is also the area of earliest English settlements, so that will minimize the culture shock experience of settling in say Detroit, MI or Chicago, IL.

   Wow. The second I read this question my first thought was it seems wrong for any American to recommend living here over the UK unless that same American had also spent some time in the UK. With that said I haven't. I have no idea what life is actually like over there. I love my country but it has many faults. Crime is high in a lot of areas. Drugs can be found anywhere. If you love religion move to the southern half of the country where there's 5 churches to every one person it seems. If you aren't very religious the west and north may suite you. The job market is not great here and quite often the pay does not match the cost of living. I guess like anywhere else it's a matter of hard work. I would suggest you study what areas would be worth moving to then visit for a couple of weeks and feel it out. One of the happiest and healthiest places in the country is Colorado.

      You are right. People see what they see on Hollywood and think that America is like that, but it only reflects 5% of the population. The rest of us definitely don't live like that.

   I didn't think that we could just decide to go live in the USA on a British or Australian passport ?  The pay there is very low compared to Australia I believe  depending on what you do for work .( Could have heard wrong ) I was on $22.86 an hour and $32 on Sundays here in Aussie
   It would be a great experience if you can do it easily  though ! I would love a couple of years there if we could but I think we are too old at 47 & 65.
   I didn't like LA much but loved San Francisco . Down South would be fascinating to explore !

      Assuming that all necessary paperwork was in order and all that. I have family in Australia and I'm told it is now horrendously expensive compared to Europe.

      No. Brits cannot go live in the USA so easily. In fact, no one can. We live in a day and age where westerners are extremely xenophobic and want to blame foreigners for everything gone wrong. The result is strict immigration laws.

   Hi @DH. I've lived in a lot of places in America. That's where I started out, but right now, knowing what's going on behind the scenes, politically, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.
   
   Summers in Arizona? If you're talking about Phoenix or Yuma, ouch! I lived 10 years in Phoenix and that's hot!
   
   For the last 5 years, I've lived in the Philippines. When I moved here, it was to marry my soul mate.
   
   After Aguasilver woke me up to the political underbelly in America, I think the USA may end up being ground zero for a pretty messy economic and political meltdown.
   
   One look at the skyrocketing national debt is enough to give anyone a fright. America won't be able to keep borrowing like that forever. When the dollar pops, the whole world will be hit and hit hard. But I think America will be hit hardest.
   
   The political system has reached the worst level of corruption I ever thought possible for America. In the last presidential election, for instance, both Dem. and Rep. conventions threw out parliamentary procedure and used their "script," instead. Caught on TV and broadcast on YouTube. Boehner had no trouble ignoring the votes and declaring that the Ayes had it. But the poor mayor of Los Angeles at the Democrat convention was understandably perplexed by cognitive dissonance between the teleprompter script and the reality of votes that were clearly not in favor of the measure being voted on. But that sham is only the tip of the iceberg.
   
   To find proof that 9/11 was an inside job made me sick for weeks -- sick and angry. I pride myself in understanding science, particularly physics and feel ashamed that I believed the Bush "conspiracy theory" for 10 years.
   
   If parts of the government (+corporations?) can murder American citizens and get away with it, I suppose they can do it anywhere on Earth, but I wouldn't want to be in America when they turn the military on everyone after the dollar collapse.
   
   If you do choose someplace in America, I'd recommend buying a small farm and planting food for your family to survive on.
   
   The very private Federal Reserve "System" is working the system to strip the Middle Class of their wealth. But any country with a Rothschild central bank is likely doing this to a degree. And they have about 99% of the countries sewed up, especially after Obama attacked Libya without the approval of Congress.
   
   It's now a felony to protest what the government is doing (HR 347)

      DH, if you want variety and change with a pleasing lifestyle, head to Asia!
      
      I would think America will soon be in dire states, rather more dire than it currently is.

      My two summers in Arizona were spent hot climate vehicle testing for Ford and based out of Lake Havasu City. That was 15 years ago. I miss it all now.
