Any recommendations for 'hang-over' free cough syrup?

   I have been feeling pretty ill the last few days (cough, aches, etc....hopefully it's not the piggy flu...) anyways, I bought some Theraflu 'Warming Relief' Severe Cold & Cough medicine. I have been taking the recommended dosage twice daily, once at night time, once in the afternoon. I am feeling terribly hungover (I haven't had any alcohol other than what is in the cough medicine). I am drinking plenty of fluids, so I think this OTC medicine is making me feel this way. Blech.
   
   Anyone have a favorite nighttime cough syrup that I can try out without it making me feel worse? Feeling this hungover from a few tablespoons of this medicine is simply awful. I don't think it is the alcohol in it, rather the other medicines. My body can certainly handle a few shots of liquor without feeling hungover like this!

      i just like good old Robitussin Cough. it supresses your cough so you can sleep and doesn't contain anything else but medicine to suppress the cough, so you don't wake up feeling groggy. i hope you feel better.

      Just want to say, sorry you feel bad, GG.  Maybe that's why the weirdness on the other thread, ?
      
      Anyway, try Alka Seltzer Plus.  It doesn't have those side effects and will allow you to get some rest.

   My husbands secret cold and cough remedy.
   
   1 cup of steaming hot orange zinger tea and soak some ginger root and cloves in it while it's brewing, take those out. And add 1 shot of wild turkey lots of honey.
   
   I find it very soothing.

      I think my mom had a recipe like this, though it involved a good shot of lemon juice in tea plus honey and Segrams 7. I think it would be better than the commercial remedy.

   Thanks....all of that antihistamine and decongestant OTC medicine really gets to me. I have some ginger and cloves and some lemon 'throat coat' tea. I think I will definitely try that out tonight. I simply cannot imagine ingesting anymore cough syrup tonight...blech! Thank you!

   Don't forget to add at least the honey. It doesn't taste great if you don't. And he says the alcohol sterilizes your throat.

      Thankfully, I just bought some honey the other day. For alcohol, all I have right now for hard liquor is peppermint schnapps (lol) and raspberry vodka. I am thinking a bit of raspberry vodka would add a nice flavor to this!

   A good straight shot of brandy is my remedy   Just kidding, that only works in the early stages...
   
   Actually, I too find that cold medicines make me feel horrible.  and not just hungover, but shaky and wobbly and my heart races and jumps.  I hate cold meds.  I have taken Coricidin before and it was alright.  It didn't take all my symptoms away but at least I was good enough to parent my 3 kiddies.  Coricidin is good for people with a sensitivity to cold meds and also those with heart problems.  I would also suggest some robaxacet for those muscle aches...however I dont know if you can mix the two.  Better ask a pharmacist.  Hope you feel better soon, I feel for you.  It's especially hard being sick when you are a mother to a young child.  Take care,

      Thankfully, I have no kids to take care of! I could only imagine, though! I haven't heard of Coricidin but will look into it. Like you, regular cough meds make me feel really shaky and wobbly, too. I also made the mistake of having an espresso earlier today (did NOT need all that caffeine lol).

         For some reason I thought you had children.  Anyways, I envy that you can actually take the time to recover.  Whenever I feel the sniffles coming on, or the swollen lymph nodes, I spend a fortune at the pharmacy.  And not only on meds for me, but for my kids as I know that after me, it will be the eldest, then the middle, then the baby...and then God forbid...my husband

            I definitely could not imagine being sick and having a family to take care of. Much power to you and all the great moms out there!
            
            I ended up making my own remedy ...here goes:
            
            Lemon Echinacea 'Throat-Coat' tea
            Some honey
            Some lemon juice
            Some ginger
            Some cloves
            A little bit of raspberry flavored vodka
            
            It does not taste like my favorite cocktail of course, but it is not too bad. It is definitely helping to soothe my throat, already! I am off to cuddle up with a Victorian mystery.

   Feel better GG.
   If your homemade brew doesn't do the trick, try regular Theraflu -- the kind you mix with warm water. Lemon flavor.
   Makes me feel warm and relaxed, but is alcohol free.
   It does have antihistamine, tho, so if you are sensitive to that, this is not for you.

    Do you have a cough? Or you just have body aches? Sore throat? Runny nose? Make a hot toddy. Warm Whiskey, splash of water, lemon juice and honey.

    Once you get over this whatever it is let me recommend you invest in some local farmed honey. You should be able to find it at your local farmer's market or possibly a roadside stand.
    
    Local honey is extracted from hives in your area thus it is made with pollens that are natural to your area.
    
    Take one teaspoon of it daily to prevent hystimines from the area from entering your system and thus making your immune system work harder to combat colds that crop up.
