How do you stop a determined cat from climbing on certain furniture?

I have a four month old kitten determined to climb on my birds cage. When I am not home she is locked out of the room they are kept in, but I when I am home I allow her to come in. (Or she screams. Cat screaming. Scary) Anyways the spray bottle no longer deters her, advice?

Scat mats work well if you can set it up near where she climbs on to the cage.  They give a little electric shock - not much, just a deterrent. They do the trick--usually.

A safe deterrent is aluminum foil. It scares cats. Just put it around the cage on the floor. I do it outside around my gardens to keep animals out and it works. We also put it next to my desk for months to keep the cat from climbing on my computer.  Possible side effects- You may get to see your cat jump 3 feet in the air out of fear and you may see your cat run into walls trying to get away.

You have to teach a kitten like the mother cat would; With dominance. When she does something wrong, pick her up by the back of the neck (like the mom would carry the baby, this does not hurt them.) and tell her no in a deep voice and give her a firm tap on the butt, above the tail, not by the hips. After a few times of doing this, you should see that she is less and less interested in the climbing because she knows it is not acceptable by you. The spray method only works for adult cats who are terrified of water. Kittens will adjust to it and make a game of it.
