Why do we get criticized and punished for speaking our minds if we're legally able to speak freely?
If you're anti gay marriage then why can't you voice your reasons for being anti gay marriage without being punished? If you're anti abortion then why can't you speak freely without being criticized for doing so? If you're an Atheist then why do people make such a big deal about people speaking so freely about not believing in a High Power?
I don't believe anybody is being punished for things like that... they maybe scrutinized but that's not the same as being punished.
To my knowledge no one is being punished for having an opinion.
Having said that I've seen both sides of every issue you have mentioned and people love to argue their position. Unfortunately some people resort to personal attacks when people don't see things their way. Never the less this is not a punishment as much as it is a "heated debate". Each of us is allowed to have our own opinion. The issues arise when someone tells another person they are "wrong". It's only human nature to want to defend one's position. Arguments are to be expected when there are 7 Billion on the planet! Like attracts like.
Well, first off, if you were an Atheist, why would you be anti-gay marriage or anti-abortion? Aren't those moral issues which mostly come from the Bible?
Some how, It seems like you may think that some people not agreeing with you, is punishment. That is due to a lack of open-mindedness and believing that your way is the only way.
If you truly feel this way, you are punishing yourself by isolating yourself inside of your own opinions and have no right blaming others for your own misery.
You are free to have an opinion, but you are also required to defend that opinion - people will not agree, and just because you say it doesn't mean it means the same to everyone.
People speak of Freedom of Speech - yes, you have freedom of speech - you can say "I'm against gay marriage/abortion/religion/drugs/etc". What you DONT have is Freedom from the Consequences of said speech.
What I mean is - you are free to say it, but you are responsible for it's consequences. So, if you say something divisive, expect to be challenged.
This is a good thing though - without challenges our opinions do not grow and strengthen.
People do punish others with verbal abuse and via other means every single day. Unfortunately, this is how many adults prefer to operate. However, it's often simply because some people do not want to be exposed to ideas or ways of life different than their own and it's their right to control or get away from the things and people they don't want to hear or have their children exposed to as well.
Others disagree with various things and simply don't want to hear any of it. Also, there is the issue of how/when/where certain things are said or done which can spark a confrontation. At other times "punishment" may simply come from a person's ill-mood or temper from other things that have nothing to do with the issue at hand.
Do not forget that it's also possible that others may want you to be quiet only so they can advance their own agenda. This is often reason enough to not go along quietly particularly if it's something important to you such as if you were pro-abortion and they were not. They cannot legally physically harm you but you can legally defend yourself. Verbally, many "adults" will just resort to whining like babies and cussing when discussing or debating hot topics. This does nothing to prove that they are knowledgeable or adults, let alone make their opinion more attractive.
Because as free as we are to speak our minds, critics are equally free to criticize and speak their minds. And the battle is on...
It is all just an illusion. We are made to think that we have freedoms while we truely do not.

I looked at my hub scores today and cried. They have been falling steadily for two weeks from 70's & 80's to 60's and 70's with one 59. Today, one of my hubs has fallen to a 50. HP is sending me mixed signals. I am told to write in a niche that I am passionate about with...
