"Famous" and "popular" are two different things entirely. Just sayin'.

Dear FatFreddysCat, you are right. There might be two different answers. Yeah, Famous is not the measure of popularity.

Droning and undeserved Nobel price. What a resume in his so glorious career! Another presidential failure!

If he was working for us, yes. But he's a roaring success to his real bosses -- Wall Street.

He's famous because he is the President of the United States.

He's popular because he is the first African-American to become President, and he has portrayed himself as being a fairly jovial and accessible President, as opposed to other older and more serious Presidents who could be perceived as more distant to the general public.

Regardless of how well people think he's doing, I think that's one of the main reasons for his popularity.

As an outside observer, that is an non-American living in Australia, I would say that Barack Obama is famous for the usual reason of being a President of the United States of America.   But he WILL remain a famous man for a number of reasons and I will try to describe those reasons and why here.

Firstly, against all the conservative odds against him he became the first President who actually has 'coloured' blood running in this veins.  It isn't easy to
'break the mold' in the USA.  Why - your country hasn't even had a female president yet and half the popolace are women!   Mind you, Hilary Clinton came close, and may well have succeeded if Barack hadn't come along.

Secondly, he wasn't exceptionally rich as are most American Presidents, or famous as a film star and former state governor like Ronald Reagan.

Thirdly, he brought the master-mind of the 7/11 attack on America to justice despite the great difficulty in finding him.

Fourthly, he will be known as the president who brought the USA through one of its greatest financial crises.  (Bit like Franklin Delano Rooseveldt did with the Great Depression of the 1930s)  It hasn't happened yet but I feel he's the man who will lead the country to its comeback.

Fifthly, and it's already been mentioned, he is an approachable and very personable and likeable man.   If he wasn't he would not have prevailed against the opposition he would have got when he ran for President first up.

Six, I've got on my bookshelves a book he wrote in 2006, long before he became President, and it was easy to deduce from reading it that he has his heart in the right place.

Quite frankly, I think as Americans you're lucky to have him.

Your observations are totally off.  His book has been proven to be written by Bill Ayers. He is not likeable - read up on his barricades to keep our vets out of their own memorial. He's a typical progressive who has spent up into a $17 trillion debt.

He is known, but not very popular. He will be known as the first African American President in history. Politically he will be known for "Obamacare."

    Famous for being black.
Popular for not being a Bush, which was really the only thing he ran on.
But after that he has pretty much fallen flat as just another political hack. Which was, of course, what he was all along. Before being president he was a 3rd rate junior senator from the most corrupt political machine in US history from a state that holds the distinction of having the most politicians in prison.
He made grand claims that he would be the most transparent presidency in history, he has been the opposite. He claimed that he would be the most inclusive administration in history drawing equally from all sides, he has been the opposite.
He was given a Nobel prize, most of us are still wondering WTF they were thinking given that he did less than nothing to deserve it. He succeeded in devaluating the Nobel to the point that for many it is now meaningless.
His, and all of Washington's, popularity is the lowest in history with the possible exception of W. Bush.
How will history see him? Unknown but not looking good.
Those who know me will tell you that I could care less about what color, or gender, the president is. Nor do I care what party they come from, although  don't see an actual good president coming from either the Democrats or GOP.
We need a President, Congress and Senate that are working solely in America's best interest with America foremost in everything they do and who have a grasp of the history that has brought us ruin rather than glory.
There has been no such thing in my lifetime, and I've been here for quite a while. Since I first started voting in 1972 I have yet to be able to vote for a candidate. Although my first vote, for Nixon who claimed he would immediately get us out of the Vietnam fiasco, might be the exception to that. Nixon did in fact get us out of Vietnam mostly by the end of 1973 and totally by 1975. And he ended the draft as promised and the last draftee was in April 1972.
We all know Nixon's end came with shame, though he really didn't do anything that other had done before him, he just got caught. No I'm not a Nixon fan.

Black and not Bush. Wonderful. But the definition of "black" is wrong. He's half white! So, he's mixed.

Barry Soetoro (Obama) is famous for lying, supplying fraudulent document (birth certificate), Treason (trashing the Constitution he swore to defend), and following almost none of his campaign promises.

Oh, and winning the Nobel Peace Prize before he had a chance to start and continue wars. Cute. The biggest warmonger in American history and he wins the Peace Prize. What does that tell you about the Nobel organization?

I voted for him the first time around, but knew within 2 months that he was not the guy he said he was.
