Why does one sometimes feel isolated or lonely even though there are people around them?

The feeling of loneliness gets many individuals or the feeling of isolation that something is missing from their lives, a kind of emptiness which  happens some point in one's life.

That feeling comes from not being filled with love. That in itself is the ultimate cure. To be absolutely blissful depends only on loving yourself at all times. Sometimes in relationships with others, a person cannot feel love from them, even though they are very pleasing and kind. This is because love is not on the outside. To feel love, a person has to go to the true source, and that is within. Loneliness comes from seeking love from outside and not receiving it. Another option is, they can buy books and learn how to cultivate good friendships. There are actual techniques for attracting and maintaining pleasant friends if  a person feels they need others affections. Those relationships will also end eventually, one way or another. So the sage says, cultivate a loving, blissful relationship with own inner being. Then that person will never be lonely. Friends, family and strangers will come and go, but the joy from the inner being will always be there. It may take time for that awakening, but its worth it. Independent bliss fills the void of emptiness that no other human being can fill on a permanent basis. http://srit.hubpages.com/hub/Self-Estee … -Happipess

One can be surrounded by people every day, even be in a good marriage - yet the feeling of loneliness stems from the lack of spiritual love and respect for Self. To be one's true self and be fulfilled in life, it is so important to find love for self and to know the right spiritual path in life. Each person is unique, so needs to find their own path. I am a spiritual coach/mentor and the question I most often get is: "I have a good life, a good marriage/relationship, lots of friends, yet I am lonely. WHY?"

In a world with over 7 billion people clearly there are no shortage of people to engage with. Loneliness comes from feeling like no one "gets you" or understands you.
More often than not it's a crisis of the ego.
We either think we're smarter than everyone around us and therefore they are unable to relate on "our level" or we believe everyone else in the world has their act together and we are bottom dwelling losers.
People who feel good about themselves never feel lonely even if they are alone! People who avoid becoming "self-centered" rarely feel disconnected from the world. If one takes (an interest in others) and things around them people tend to be attracted to them. We have the option of choosing our thoughts and placing our focus wherever we choose. If you know yourself well then you also know what music puts you in a good mood, food, drink, movies, books, locations, activities, and people who seem to help pull you out of a funk.
The act of cutting ourselves off from the rest of the world often leads to feelings of loneliness and isolation. Sometimes it helps to find like minded groups of people that are on the same path as yourself.
The only real cure for depression is taking action.
