Do you think the more we know about our health, the more ill we become?

In recent times, everyone seems to be ill with something. They are either allergic to something, have a pain that is a result of a disease, or are suffering from some neurological problem.
If we didn't have a label to put on these illnesses, and problems, do you think we would feel better? Do you feel people are using these as a reason for not achieving more  in their lives? Are we turning into a bunch of hypochondriacs?

I don't think we are learning enough about our health. For every condition/medication, there are 63 side effects to it. So you try to cute one thing & can develop 63 other problems. I think I'd rather just not take anything & take my chances being sick.

Drug interactions is a complicated issue and only one a pharmacist, not a doctor is qualified to understand. I fear too many doctors are sponsored by the drug manufactures.

Studies show that the richer that people are in the U.S. and Europe, the healthier they are. This is not due to doctors and their medications. For example this is what killed Michael Jackson at age 50, Elvis Presley at age 42, Whitney Houston at age 48, Brittany Murphy at age 32 and Heath Ledger at age 28.

People busy trying to make enough money, generally speaking) do not have the time to learn about what will help them to live longer. This 42 year old woman worked at an herbal catalog company (no famous people ever died from herbs) and had a 66 year old mother. She said that the last time her mother saw a doctor was 42 years ago when she gave birth to her.

Richer people are generally more intelligent and have learned a lot more. Most of the information is obtained through reading and a lot of people in jail cannot read. U.S. Dept. of Education says 14% of U.S. adults are illiterate. 63% of prison inmates cannot read.

As you say, the more money one has the better the health care and knowledge. Thanks for your comment.

Neurologists will tell you that the mind controls the body or largely controls it. Knowledge of being ill will elicit either a sense of resignation or a sense of fight or a sense of denial.
I my case I chose to learn about my illness to be able to control it. The dread over cancer or heart disease is largely owing to ignorance about them. Yet if we knew of the free radical theories of disease, these are easy to prevent and treat and sometimes to cure them.

I feel that unlike yourself, some don't take a logical approach. Some people almost want to find something wrong with themselves and find glory in admitting they are ill. Perhaps it is Münchausen syndrome in many. Thank you for your comment.

I agree with conra's statements.  I believe in education of illness and disease - the more you know, the more you will be able to fight it.. even find the cure.

I think people take some minor concerns, go onto google and search it ans suddenly a large amount of stuff pops up . Suddenly they think i got this, even though they might have some of the simptoms does not mean they have it. I think eat well, excercise and drink a lot of water. Stay natural and you will feel healthy.

I agree, I think a little knowledge is a dangerous thing. We now can diagnosis ourselves using Google and of course, usually we are wrong. Thanks for your answer.

Knowing more about the diseases will not make us ill. When we read about a disease condition, we may feel temporarily that we might get this disease. But that will not make us ill or have the signs and symptoms of that particular disease.
A lot of changes happen within the body before we get a disease. Of course there can be psychological reasons for some disease;but not all

True, I don't believe all go on to become hypochondriacs. Some people though, do love the added drama in their lives. Thanks  for your response.

Tricky question and even trickier to answer! Perhaps I can fire the essence of the question back at you with this:
Doctors and others who work in the field know more about health than the average person in the street but are health professionals more prone to illness? I'd say not - but you never know! You'd need good solid statistics to back that particular claim up.

More people know more about everything these days because of the internet. I'm sure there are individuals who look up a topic such as 'symptoms for personality disorder' say, and check through the list and conclude that yes, they too have a mental illness!! What they fail to notice is that millions of others have the same symptoms too!
A little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing!!

Conversely I'd say that the internet has also given millions of concerned people insight into what might be mild symptoms of a potential illness or disease and helped them discover stuff in time for a cure.

In my lifetime I would say I've seen many more allergies and mental aberrations come to the fore. There seems to be a new allergy every day, a new psycho-emotional syndrome created each month, to keep up with all these disturbing new symptoms. Perhaps this is all part of the evolution of a modern society - a polarisation - we're healthier than ever before, we live longer fuller lives ....but in contrast, more and more we seem to be somehow weaker psychologically?

Good point. Maybe where some choose to use knowledge as a preventive measure and a guide to better health, others choose to use it as a crutch and an excuse for their lack of perceived  achievements in their lives. Thanks for such a detailed answer..
