Valentine's Day As Couples do you celebrate it or ignore it?

We tend to ignore it.  In our minds it's a manufactured holiday designed to get people to buy a lot of junk and express sentiments because they feel they have to.  I personally love it when my partner surprises me throughout the year randomly.  He's very sweet and will bring me a rose or something if he knows I'm having a tough day.  We both compliment one another regularly - because we want to and mean it - not because of a holiday.  Valentine's to us seems kind of fake.  Do you and your partner celebrate it?  Do you put a lot of emphasis on it?

When we were still dating (many years ago) my now-wife and I made a big deal of V-Day. We'd go out to dinner and a movie and make a special "date night" out of it.
Fifteen years of marriage and two kids later, we don't have time for such things but we still give each other a card and I will bring home some flowers for her.

Funny how the dynamic changes from dating to married isn't it? When we were dating he had roses sent to me, but we also lived 90 minutes apart. Today, we sack out on the sofa and watch a show together lol.

My husband and I work together, commute together, sleep together...  Kind of ironic that I miss my husband - the one who used to write poems, play certain songs so we can dance, and sex - that doesn't happen anymore either.  I think the best gift we could give each other is some distance.  Not a break-up by any means but a separate vacation to prove the old saying "absence makes the heart grow fonder."  LOL
As for Valentine's Day - it's just another commercialized day and we, like you, try to surprise each other randomly throughout the year.  smile

I understand that! smile We get along great still, but I think the dynamic changes over the years and sometimes absence indeed makes the heart grow fonder. Personal time is very important.

I love Valentine's Day, but mostly because I have a family and enjoy supporting my daughter in celebrating Valentine's Day with crafts and lessons and just a lot of love. My view on it is that it's not romantic as much as it's a day that reminds us to express what we're feeling for one another.

Most of the time I'd leave it, romantically, but my husband is determined to have a Valentine's Day that puts the focus on him -- and men in general. I don't mind this really at all. I'd much rather see him be loving throughout the year (and he is) than to feel trapped into spending one day being romantic.

For the kids though? Heck yes!

Agreed with the kids smile I had a ball helping my little guy fill out his valentine's for class and I plan to get them both a little treat tomorrow.

When we were younger, we did the whole nine yards, but now, we, too, do little things each day for each other.  However, we may give each other a sweet card.  It is just a commercial day for businesses, especially florist to jack up the price of roses and take advantage, and then those who cannot afford such feel bad.  Unfortunately, too many will place a lot of expectation on THE day, and will be let down of course.  So, I am a firm believer in showing little acts of love throughout the entire year and not just one day out of the whole year!

I totally agree.  It's those little random acts that seem to be the most appreciated too.  smile

Ignore it. We can't buy anything, don't have the option of getting out without the kids, and all-in-all it just seems like a waste. That said, the only guy to ever buy me flowers was a gay friend, so maybe I just don't know how nice that "girly stuff" can be tongue. On a serious note -- my husband is very thoughtful and will usually do things for me as they occur to him, and I try to do the same for him whenever I see an opening. I agree, Valentine's Day just seems forced and fake, and pretty much always slips by unnoticed.

I prefer flowers you can keep, so for mothers day one year they planted a rose bush for me in front smile that way you keep on getting flowers - that's the way to go. smile

In the Philippines Valentine's Day is the best day for business in restaurants. It's also the worst traffic day ever, even if you drive somewhere five minutes from your house. My husband and I usually celebrate on Feb. 13 to avoid traffic. This year however, my girl friends and I celebrated GALentie's Day and the hubby and his friends celebrated PALentie's day. It was lots of fun.
