I don't really think it's possible to stop the (urge) to want to eat.
You simply have to (choose) either a different activity such as going to the gym, taking a walk, reading, watch a DVD, or eat something "healthy" like a garden salad, celery sticks, baby carrots, or some fruit.
I've been a bit of an emotional eater all of my life. I eat when I feel blue and I eat to celebrate! My weakness is bread and bread like products (pizza, donuts, cakes, dinner rolls, garlic bread, pancakes, waffles, biscuits) and throw in some cheesecake, potatoes, chips, milkshakes, burgers, hotlinks, and fried foods like bacon, chicken, sausage and ice cream, I'm good to go!
What I find most interesting about being an "emotional eater" is the fact that we tend to be (selective) about whatever it is we love to eat in that moment! It's not just about wanting to eat anything. You have to force yourself to eat a cucumber or a banana instead of a polish sausage with grilled onions and large fries along with soda/refills. Controlling what you eat is more important than worrying about forcing yourself to stop eating.
In order to prevent/assist in stopping emotional eating, you must understand the difference between emotional eating and actually being hungry. If you are hungry, pretty much anything is game to eat, like healthy choices, vegetables, etc. Emotional hunger comes on instantly and usually has you craving sugars and fatty foods and even when your full, you still want more. Emotional hunger does't come from your stomach, it's in your head, and it appears you only concentrate on certain foods, smells, tastes. If you are unable to control your emotions and fulfill them by alternative means other than food, more than likely you will not stop emotional eating without some type of intervention.
You don't have to Christa, you just have start emotionally "healthy" eating....A serious scientific fact for you....If you eat something you hate every day for 30 days, you will end up loving it....If you stop eating something you love everyday for 30 days, you will start going off it....You can train your body to love, or hate what ever you want it to as far as food, but first you have to train your mind....Your mind wants a doughnut, but your body needs a carrot....Your mind wants some chocolate, but your body needs nutrients.
To stop emotional eating control your emotions. Use deep slow belly breathing and think happy thoughts. If you believe you have a lot of control over your emotions then you do. Take responsibility for the way you feel.
Negative thoughts and emotions cause your body to try to store fat. You can't ignore cravings but you can reduce or eliminate them. People often tell me I eat too much but I don't overeat. I just eat a lot because I exercise a lot. It is okay to eat a lot if your body needs the food.
