How do you deal with work overload?
With staff cuts in these difficult economic times, more and more people are facing work overload on their jobs. People’s health could suffer as jobs get more demanding. What steps do you take to deal with job overload?
I personally have not had to face work overload but I am currently seeing my dad working ridiculous hours doing just that. How does he deal with it? He doesn't. And he has suffered ill health as a consequence. All we can do is offer help with his housework, cooking etc and so my advice to anyone suffering in this way is to not be afraid to ask for help or take it if it's offered.
Thanks for your response, jensa20. I'm really sorry to hear about what's happening to your Dad.
First, I think the best thing you can do is to stay organized and prioritize your workload. Second, don't be afraid to ask for help. I see this all the time in the organization I work for. Being over-burdened can lead to chronic stress, which is terrible for your body. I also advocate taking a break or two away from your desk. Go outside and walk a quick walk around the block.
Thanks for your response LisaRoppolo. I agree, being organized and prioritizing can be helpful.
I know about this all too well. I worked in an office once that had massive cut backs. I was elected to wear several hats in addition to my demanding job with long hours.
I had to learn how to speak up and prioritize my own schedule and not allow someone else to do it for me. That way I was in charge of my day. I knew what had to get done immediately and what could wait. It was very stressful when someone would intrusively suggest that something they wanted me to do was more important than anything I had on my plate already, but I learned that I had to stand up for myself.
Assertiveness helps in these situations.
Thanks for responding CraftytotheCore. I like your suggestion about being assertive.
I actually already wrote a hub on my perspective of this very topic . Mine is written from the point of view of someone who works from home, but some points -- such as taking time for yourself no matter what -- apply to virtually anyone who works in any capacity.
