Is a parent right to cut a grandparent out of their life if they constantly undermine the parent

So if a grandparent was never around when the parent (Mrs.X) was a kid, is a real piece of work, manipulative, a liar and has been bringing the grandchild to places that the parent specifically told them not to, should they be cut out? The situation has gone on for years and the grandparent also bullies and gangs up on the the parent (Mrs.X)with the siblings and tries to assert control on a constant basis.

This time, the grandparent was told NOT to bring the child to a disruptive relatives house. She told the child to lie. Both parents expressly banned the relative from seeing the child.

The parents are in control of the child and a grandparent who willfully goes against the will of the parents and tells the child to lie is not being a good influence.  It can be a hard choice to be sure, but yes, there are times when it is acceptable to remove a grandparent from a child's life if they cannot respect the wishes of the parent and are engaging in behaviors that are questionable.

Thank you for your input ChristinS. It's so difficult to deal with such dysfunction especially when the Gparent plays on the emotions of the kid and uses bad things to make them love them rather than being a grandparent.

As the grandmother of a two-year-old, my first reaction was to say "no." Then I read your remarks. As a parent, you really have to do what is in the best interest of your child. You are his/her first line of defense. If the child is in danger, physically or emotionally, you need to do whatever you have to in order to protect your child.

Imagine teaching your grandchild to lie about going somewhere they weren't supposed to be and then saying it is your right. It's baffling. I hate to say it, but after her failing to apologize, we may have no choice.

If they weren't a good parent, they are unlikely to be a good grandparent. I wouldn't let a grandparent like that disrupt the dynamics within my family.

If she can't follow your rules, don't let her have your child without supervision. If she still can't behave herself, I'd stop giving her access - but make sure you tell her why. And tell your child why, too.

The grandmothers mother is the very same too. They buy gifts to buy love. They behave like they own our child, are very dangerous with her and disregard everything we say. Our daughter is only 3 so wouldn't understand.
