Could narcissism define religious belief?
As many theists have stated here, that they, alone, possess the ultimate truth of the universe in the form of a supernatural deity. Is this not a true definition of narcissism. self-absorbed, self-obsessed, conceited, self-centered, self-regarding, egotistical, egoistic belief, A belief that places them above humanity, that only they are to be saved and transported to a heavenly Utopia of bliss in a forever afterworld? This is the unbeliever, It is this that denies humanity and subverts it to, relegates it to a test status, to be judged by them, as sinners.
Most of the theists I have seen on here view humanity as a whole as trash that can only be saved through Jesus. With that in mind, I dont think they actually realize they are placing themselves above others as worthy since they do not view themselves as worthy to begin with.
Very confusing how that "logic" works. Doesn't do much to disprove my assumption that a denial of reality is at work.
Many of those who believe they have "found the truth" in a revelatory religion are so empowered by their new way of thinking that they feel the need to spread their new worldview with everyone they meet. This is common among many of the revelatory religions, not just Christianity. Also, if their religious text commands them to spread their religion, that provides all the more impetus to engage in evangelism. I have experienced this firsthand as I was once caught up in a religious ideology.
In the case of Christianity, most Bible literalists believe that they will one day rule over non-believers with an iron fist (following the example of Jesus during the Millennial Reign) and after all this ruling is finished they will sit back and bask in glory as their enemies (unbelievers) are burned in an eternal fire by the God of Love.
Yes, undercover narcissism does seem to be a part of religion.
wow, amazing you placed a question regarding what is the act of faith in a religion, and then define it by pointing out what "many" theists here have stated. The issue with religion is that the very people who enter it first of all must recognize that we are the same as everyone else afflicted by the long list of problems that you listed above. But it seems you dont think you do.
Pedro--What ultimate truth do I proclaim, that I alone possess?
cjhunsinger you speak as if you could read what is in the mind of the "many" theists who speak fervently based on their faith.
Many other people speak with the same fervor for other causes, confident that they are right in their believes. atheists?
Pedro
I am almost positive that you are right.
Pedro, CJ has delusions of grandeur. He calls it "reason," though his Ego is so big he cannot see the flaws in his reasoning. He has used many illogics. Pointing them out to him does no good.
Lonestar, you must admit that you have no room to speak about using logic or reason. Most of your posts deal with concepts that cannot be verified or understood with logic and reason. I'm sure you're better qualified for that.
CJ, you cannot see the forest for the trees.
Ego is the problem. Not religion. Religion is merely a byproduct of spirituality (search for Truth) and Ego's corruption.
Ego is that which corrupts all things of man. It is the source of all suffering and evil.

Theists/Atheists: Can you compliment the opposite belief system? If you're a theist, what's something positive you could say about atheists? If you're an atheist, what's something positive you could say about theists? Please no sarcastic or passive-aggressive responses.

I am sincerely curious as to why those who do not believe in the existence of God would spend time and energy to convince others to believe the same? I am asking this respectfully and am seeking true, valid answers--not attacks or arguments. I just want to understand the...
