Your question assumes that sexuality is black and white: straight, or gay. In reality, sexuality is many shades of gray. People can be attracted to others of the same gender without identifying as gay, and of the opposite gender without identifying as straight.

I would say that someone who identifies as gay, but meets a compatible person of the opposite gender might have a successful straight relationship with that person, but also might not be attracted to other people of the opposite gender.

For some, attraction and coupling is about individual people, and not about gender.

Sag Diva....Interesting question.  Being Gay is not a conversion in the first place, so "converting back" is a moot question.  Human beings come into the world programmed by their DNA.  Sexual identity is a genetic event.
Many, many gay people have had opposite-sex-relationships-marriages for a specific period of time in their lives.  However, if and when they have the courage and make the decision to come out, they readily abandon their masquerade life.  This used to happen much more often than it has in the past few years due to the Huge LGBT Campaign for the rights & freedoms afforded to all human beings.
Very little is hidden now and LGBT individuals feel free and more comfortable to reveal their true self.
I can't quote statistics, but merely share with you the facts that I have learned thus far through research and study.
In all honesty, IMHO, this is a question better answered by LGBT people themselves.  It is very difficult for one group to fully understand the mind of the other.
To give one sure answer to your question:  It seems to me the Bi-sexual population goes back & forth if they choose, repeatedly.  Right?   This is not the norm for gays & Lesbians, who are strictly same sex attracted.
I hope this helps a little.

I actually have a friend who was Straight until they were 28 years old. So, I definitely believe that it is a "case by case" scenario. I also believe that people should be with "Anyone" who makes them happy. Thank you for your opinion fpherj48.

Anybody can change. And many have changed. Nobody is stuck with any kind of behavior, orientation or choice.

Could you provide specific examples of gay people who have "turned" straight?

There are many public testimonies, especially with religious people. Maybe it's just guilt or fear of their God. But they felt it was the wrong lifestyle after fully embracing their religion.

Sure......M A Y B E.   but highly unlikely if people deal in reality.  Have a nice day.  I prefer not to argue the inarguable.  Thanks.

Sri T, yes there are stories of gay people who have married the opposite sex and lived as a straight person, but that is far different than actually changing your sexual attraction. Sexual attraction is deeper than mere choice or circumstance.

I can't imagine why a gay man or lesbian would want to go against their natural attraction anymore than a heterosexual would. It's 2015! More and more people are comfortable being themselves.
Even if they attempted to "convert" there would always be a lingering temptation to revert back to what is "natural" for them.
