   As you grew up, did your family have cats or dogs?  When you became an adult , what was your pet?

   As I was growing up we had dogs, border collies.  When I got on my own we had cats and dogs, hampsters, muscovy ducks, chickens, rabbits and mice.  Now that my children are all grown up and on their own, I now have 7 cats and one boxer, lab shepherd mix dog.  I have to have a pet, if not more.

      I forgot the goats, we had them too. Not while I was growing up but when my children were growing up.

   We didn't have a dog or a cat when I was a kid - Mom was afraid of one and allergic to the other (I forget which was which)... but we did have a pair of rabbits in a hutch outside.
   ...which became six rabbits, and then became twelve rabbits, if you catch my drift. (best crash course in sex ed. a 9 year old could ask for...)
   
   Since our marriage my wife and I have had two cats (both now passed), and we're now on our second dog. Our beloved golden retriever passed last year and we now have a beagle mix.
   
   My next door neighbor's chickens occasionally come across the road to visit our yard, so my kids treat them as "pets" too!

   Yes we had both cats and dogs. As an adult I once had a dog named 'Lady'. It was a mix between coyote and German Shepherd or that is what I was told. Great pup and very loyal. In those days I could leave the backdoor open when going to work and she could go inside or outside at will.
   
   We felt comfortable with letting her do her own thing. What was unique was when people jumped our fence to cut through the backyard she would just very quietly walk up to the person trying to climb the other side. She very, very seldom would ever bark and really never growled. If the person saw her they usually were real quick getting over the fence. It was humorous at times. I wondered about when I was not home to see those kind of adventures for her.
   
   Today, I have a hummingbird & butterfly garden. Those hummingbirds are the pets I know now. The males are territorial and will defend their food source allowing some visitors. With that knowledge I am pretty sure I see the same hummingbird (An Anna Hummingbird).
   
   Five or six times a week a Raven visits one of the two bird baths outside. It looks about and recognizes me when I am sitting in the garden. Apparently I am not threatening as it will spend minutes at the birdbath looking about. It chased a feral cat away a couple of times. Oddly or maybe without oddity it does not chase a black kitten away that will be in the garden at the same time. But, that tom gray feral it will chase away real fast. Interesting.
   
   The same black kitten with two white paws will visit me around 4AM when I go outside to smoke. Sometimes it is brave and will come up the steps to the porch and sit behind the chair across from me. It does meow, but we have not had any contact yet. Maybe one day we will. Interesting. I am pondering a name as well as if it is a neighbor's or not. I think not on that.

   When I was growing up, my family had both cats and dogs. We had the habit of taking in strays that happened to wander into our yard so we kept them. Sometimes we would place ads in the newspaper if the dog or cat had a collar but otherwise I felt that it was just destiny.
   Some of the cats lived to be in their twenties.
   
   As an adult ,I opted for a cat and named her Tiffany. I saved her from a drowning in a creek  so she was my pal for 23 years and moved everywhere with me.
   I also named my pet sitting service after her .

   When I was growing up, we have cats and dogs, chickens, ducks, rabbits, cows and even pigs. It was hard work having to produce foods for these animals. It is alright for the cows because we just left them to eat the grass on the hills but during summer, my father used to give them banana stalks and leaves to eat as the green grass turned brown during summer when there was no rain.But as an adult now I have only Gold Fish as a pet. I used to have five to start off with but one by one they died except one which I pamper at the moment. I like gold fishes.
