What does the bible mean when it said "do not cast your pearls before a swine?"

Mathew 7:6  6 "Do not give what is holy to dogs, and do not throw your pearls before swine, or they will trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces.

I take it to mean that when we witness to someone and they make hateful comments or dis GOD and Jesus? To not cast our pearls of wisdom to such because they do not want Him.

I think Susan's answer is accurate. I also think it literally means to do not continue telling someone about Christ when they are obviously against the Word because "they will trample them( the Word of God) under their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces."  Some people can handle that later part, and some people cannot.

Personally, I think the main reason is it is an act of mercy. If we tell someone about Christ, but they adamantly reject it then we are to cease because they are responsible of what they know, and their eternal judgment will be that much more severe--forever. I believe this is why God blinds some peoples heart, and deafens their ears( spiritually) because it is an act of mercy by God.

Hi Caleb, good answer, and I agree. Then there is this question, if we are not suppose to cast our pearls, then how do we witness to Atheiest or do we? Do we need to prove to them that God exists?
