    My father.
We use to debate on who was better: John Wayne or Clint Eastwood. My vote was for Eastwood back then and judging from the span of both of their careers. I think Clint was not only the more interesting "cowboy" but also the creator of more memorable characters in front of and behind the camera. I suspect it was a generational thing.
My father also believed Joe Louis was better than Muhammad Ali.

You may have a point; Wayne was kind of stereotyped, and more or less played the same character in most roles--until True Grit and its sequel...  ;-)  Which is why those came to my mind first...the rest were rather ho-hum.

As stupid as this sounds... I think of the early 80's novelty song "Rappin' Duke" by Shawn Brown.

The reason I think of it is because I was in high school when this song was a hit, and our gym teacher Mr. Darrow looked and sounded a lot like John Wayne. It didn't take long before the kids started calling him "Rappin' Duke."

He was an American Persona that represented what people thought was America.

I could name a lot of things, mostly America-based, about John Wayne, but the one thing that came to my mind was "Rio Lobo," with Jack Elam as one of his co-stars. I truly miss them both.

True Grit ... and I think there was a sequel named after Wayne's character in that movie:  Rooster Cogburn.  ;-)

His plea for others not to smoke! and, his role with beating cancer.

Regarding movie career there are some favorites. True Grit comes to mind always. That age centered role is followed next with Shootist. Younger days were WWII roles more than westerns. I lean toward Clint Eastwood too as a western role to be reckoned with. One civil war epic that comes in my mind is Horse Soldiers.

Some sources said that he was racist or prejudice. Is that true?
