Did God favor Jewish founder Isaac over his Muslim brother, Ishmael?
I was just reading the news, and the recent terrorist attacks are still making the rounds. Its all so depressing. I have often wondered if this isn't the reason why so many people struggle with depression - our world is scary.
My mind started to wander, and the story came up of Ishmael's mother praying to God for mercy after Sarah had her and her son banished from Abraham's camp after Isaac was born. I wonder if some religious peeps see Ishmael's story as meaning he was 'beneath' Isaac - so Islam is being viewed as 'something that shouldn't exist'; when it was SARAH's fault that he exists.
I think that the answer is yes. Sarah disobeyed God. She wanted to have a baby, and couldn't, and because she did not have faith in God, made her husband lay with Hagar. Hagar got pregnant, and had Ismael. God did not entirely forsake Ismael, but He did bless him. But He had planned for Sarah to have a baby of her own. In a way he shouldn't have existed, because Abram shouldn't have committed adultery. God made Hagar go back to Sarah and live with her. I don't think this story is the root of depression. Depression comes from evil and sin--Satan.
I didn't mean that the bible story was depressing - fighting across the world over religious dogma is. Was Ishmael a 'surprise' for God? If Isaac-only was in his plan; could/should he not have intervened and prevented it instead of INCLUDING him?
God's ways are not our ways. We will not always understand why He does the things He does.
I would agree with that. What concerns me is what seems to be a deepening hatred for Muslims because of the conflicts in the Middle East - like the #StopIslam tag that was on Twitter. I just think the people & religion themselves deserve more res

Why did Abraham banish Ishmael (Genesis 21:14)?Jacob's sons even though they are born through the maid servants of Leah and Rachel got the right to be called Jacob's sons and become the patriarchs. Then why did Ishmael refused to inherit the blessings promised to Abraham?

Does anyone know why God Said this when Ishmael was also Abraham's son? “Abraham, Abraham!” And he said, “Here am I.” He said, “Do not lay your hand on the lad or do anything to him; for now I know that you fear God, seeing you have not withheld your son, your only son, from me.”
